Plate1 Problem 18

The document provides calculations for relative density (Dr) and void ratio of a granular soil from a borrow pit, with final answers for Problem #23 including specific values for dry density, void ratio, and relative density. It also outlines the necessary data for Problem #24, including in-place dry density and laboratory determined maximum and minimum densities. The calculations involve determining the relative density and specific gravity of the soil based on given densities and void ratios.

Final Answers for Problem # 23:

a) 𝛾𝑑 = 17.1009 kN/m3

b) e = 0.5546

c) Dr = 0.6204 or 62.04%

Problem # 24

A granular soil located in a borrow pit is found to have an in place dry density of 1895 kg/m3

. In

the laboratory, values of dry maximum density and minimum density are determined as 2100

kg/m3

and 1440 kg/m3

respectively.

a) Compute the relative density of the soil in borrow pit.

b) Compute the void ratio of the soil in natural condition if the maximum and minimum

densities indicate void ratios of 0.28 at the max. density and 0.92 at minimum density.

c) Compute the specific gravity of this soil.

Given:

𝜌𝑑𝑟𝑦 = 1895 kg/m3

𝜌𝑚𝑎𝑥 = 2100 kg/m3

𝜌𝑚𝑖𝑛 = 1440 kg/m3

𝑒𝑚𝑎𝑥 = 0.92

𝑒𝑚𝑖𝑛 = 0.28

Solution:

For relative density

Dr =
