Essential Question:   How can we help children who aren’t able to afford school supplies?

Three Points to Prove: #1:  many families don’t have the money for supplies

#2:  students go to school ashamed and feel left out

#3:  How other people try to help the students get supplies

Point that this Source Proves:  1

Excerpts (These should provide insight into the Point to Prove)
In the beginning of the article Alison Stine  explains “Last year parents were predicted to spend
an average of $529 per child on school supplies.”

She later explains “ The list is usually very specific with precise brands.”

Towards the end of the article Stine states “ With the right supplies it helps create a more level
playing field for learning when everyone uses the same tools.”

Analysis (How does this source support the Point to Prove?):

With the average cost being $529 for everything needed for school, some families struggle to pay for
that. This cost doesn’t only include school supplies but it also includes uniforms or clothes, shoes,
backpack, water bottles, and computers. Families around the world who don’t make as much
aren’t able to buy everything. So they need to pick and choose what is more important. No family
should have to choose what is more important to buy for a child for school.
School supply lists for every school is different. But almost every school is very specific with heir
list. It could be because they don’t want some children to have better things then other children or
it could just simply be that that’s what they prefer. With the families who don’t have enough money
for supplies, these specific brands and types of supplies could be a challenge. One specific brand
could be out of the price range for some families causing them to not be able to buy it.
This goes back to the point I previously made about everyone having the same supplies. Yes, when
everyone has the same supplies it creates a more level playing field for children to learn. But not
every family can afford it causing children to feel left out.
