THE GROWTH
Jamnalal Bajaj the founder of BAJAJ was born in the year 1889 to a
poor family. Due to poverty he was adopted by Bachraj a distant
relative to Jamnalal Bajaj. He started considering Bachraj as his own
father. Bachraj was a rich business man and after some years Jamnalal
Bajaj also took part in his business. And also Jamnalal was a big
devotee of Mahatma Gandhi. Due to his father‟s demise in 1926,
Jamnalal was very depressed and he asked Mahatma Gandhi to
consider him as his 5th son. Jamnalal even went to jail with Mahatma
Gandhi for the Swadeshi movement.
In Uttar Pradesh, Sugarcane farmers were very much affected by the
sugar manufacturing industries because sugarcane was purchased for
a very low price. When Mahatma Gandhi came to know about this,
Gandhi approached Jamnalal Bajaj to start a sugar manufacturing
industry. Since Jamnalal was a big devotee and he respects the words
of Gandhi, Jamnalal Bajaj started a sugar manufacturing industry in
the name of “HINDUSTAN SUGAR MILLS” in 1931. This is the
first business which was started by Bajaj family. Though Jamnalal
participated in Indian Independence related movements, he died in the
year 1942 without witnessing the Independence of India. After
Jamnalal Bajaj, Kamalnayan son of Jamnalal took over the business.
He was interested in entering various industries. In the name of his
grandfather, Kamal Nayn started “BACHRAJ TRADING
CORPORATION PVT LTD” on November 29, 1945 which was a
very important date for Bajaj family.
In 1945, Kamalnayan realized that there is a high demand for Piaggio
VESPA scooter. He thought of importing the scooters to India. So he
made an agreement with Piaggio to import Vespa scooter and Auto
Rickshaw. Vespa scooters and Auto Rickshaw were very much
welcomed by Indian customers. Sale of Vespa scooters were
10
increasing every year. In 1950 Kamal Nayn made an important
decision to stop importing the scooters and start manufacturing his
own scooters. As he decided, in the same year Kamal Nayn renamed
the company to “BAJAJ AUTO” and made an agreement with
Piaggio and started manufacturing scooters in Pune, Maharashtra.
In 1965, Kamal Nayn‟s son Rahul Bajaj returned India after
completing his MBA from Harvard Business School. Rahul Bajaj was
a fearless and a highly motivated person and also he was a boxer,
soon he entered his father‟s business and played an important role.
After 4 years there was a huge demand for Bajaj vehicles, the vehicles
manufactured by Bajaj exceeded 1 lakh per year. And also, at that
time big changes were happening in Indian politics. There was a
misunderstanding between Kamarajar and Sonia Gandhi, the two
main leaders of congress party. Kamarajar deposed Sonia Gandhi
from the party, though Sonia Gandhi continued to remain as the Prime
Minister of India because of the huge support from the party
members. But Bajaj family, who were close with Mahatma Gandhi,
supported Kamarajar. This created a bad image on Bajaj family for
the Central Government which was governed by Sonia Gandhi. To
renew the agreement which was made with Piaggio, the central
government opposed for the renewal of the agreement because the
Bajaj family were supporting Kamarajar. Amidst this, Kamalnayan
died in the year 1972.
After Kamal Nayn‟s death, Rahul Bajaj at his age 34 became the
managing director of Bajaj group. Since central government were not
in favor of renewing Bajaj contract with Piaggio, Rahul Bajaj decided
to use the technology resources available in India, he was also
impressed by the Indian engineers. He started manufacturing Indian
based scooters. After a year “BAJAJ CHETAK” was introduced.
It was welcomed very well by the Indians because it was much
advanced than Piaggio VESPA, and also it was exported to Australia,
11
Bahrain, Hong Kong, Nigeria, Sudan, and Yemen. Bajaj was given a
license to manufacture only 20,000 scooters per year, scooters were
sold within few weeks because of the high demand. Bajaj also started
manufacturing Auto Rickshaws with engine at the back of an Auto,
before that Auto Rickshaw with engine in the front was only in the
market. Till date Bajaj is the market leader of Auto Rickshaw. In
1981 Bajaj manufactured M50, a new model of scooter with a unique
and a different design. This model started becoming the favorite of
many customers. Around 11 lakh M50 orders were placed after Bajaj
announced their new model. Because of the government restrictions
to manufacture only 20,000 scooters per year, Bajaj struggled to
deliver CHETAK and M50 scooters because there was a huge gap
between the demand and supply. Customers who ordered the scooters,
waited for years to get it. Rahul Bajaj decided to open a new
manufacturing unit to increase the production, but central government
which was governed by Sonia Gandhi, rejected the proposal which
was given by Rahul Bajaj, but he did not even respond to that.
In the period of Rahul Gandhi government, Bajaj were given the
permission to start their 2nd manufacturing unit and Rahul Bajaj
thought that there will be an immense growth in the company. But at
that time, Japan based motorbike manufacturing companies like
Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Yamaha targeted the motorbikes market
and also they were growing faster. The sale of motorbikes started
increasing and it was more than the sale of scooters because the
motorbikes with high mileage were sold for economical prices. So
Rahul Bajaj decided to enter into the motorbike market. In 1984,
BAJAJ made an agreement with Kawasaki and they introduced
BAJAJ KAWASAKI bikes. In 1986, M80 was also introduced and
over 5, 00,000 M80‟s were sold in the same year, which was a record
breaking sales by Bajaj. After that BAJAJ SUNNY 50cc and BAJAJ
LEGEND scooters were introduced and well received in the market.
Bajaj became the 4th largest motorbike company in the world after
12
Honda, Kawasaki, and Suzuki. Rahul Bajaj realized that the
motorbikes are going to be the future, so Bajaj focused on motorbikes
than scooters. Hero Honda Splendor 100cc bikes were skyrocketing in
sales in the year 1997, at the same year Bajaj introduced BAJAJ
BOXER and in 1998 BAJAJ CALLIBER was also introduced.
Though it was welcomed by the customers very well, these bikes
could not reach the sales of Hero Honda Splendor bikes.
Rahul Bajaj took an important decision to manufacture 150cc
motorbikes. Despite the opposition made by the employees and
shareholders of Bajaj, Rahul Bajaj started manufacturing 150cc bikes.
After 3 years of hard work, the epic model “PULSAR” was
introduced in the year 2001. Pulsar was introduced by Bajaj especially
for the youngsters. Unique and different advertisements were made
for Pulsar to attract the youngsters. Around 3, 00,000 Pulsar bikes
were sold in the year 2002 and youngsters were very much attracted
to Pulsar. Bajaj became a huge competitor for other companies after
introducing Pulsar, Platina, Discover, CT100.In 2008, there was a
huge decline in sales for Bajaj vehicles because of the recession
which happened in the year 2008 globally, anyway India was not very
much affected by the recession under the government of Manmohan
Singh. In 2009, Bajaj stopped manufacturing scooters because of their
decline in sales and gave their full importance in manufacturing
motorbikes. Bajaj introduced Avenger, V15, and BajajDominor in the
upcoming years. Bajaj also introduced Pulsar RS200, Pulsar NS200,
Pulsar 220F, Pulsar NS160 and Bajaj Chetak electric scooters. Bajaj
also made an agreement with KTM to produce Bajaj KTM bikes. And
now Bajaj is the second largest Motorbike manufacturer in India with
over 75 years of legacy.

THE BUSINESS GROUP AND THE SOCIETY

COPING WITH THE CHANGES
During the year 1969, there was a conflict between Bajaj and
Government due to some political issues .As Government made the
export restriction across India, Bajaj came up of this hundreds by
started manufacturing scooters in India.
In 1981, Rahul Bajaj was the chief executive officer of Bajaj Auto.
Due to the license Raj act by the government, the company could
produce only 20,000 units per year under existing restrictions. There
was problem in demand and supply, customers who had booked a
M80 model scooter and wait over years to get it. However, Rahul
Bajaj ignored the government restrictions and increases the
production of the scooters. He also reduced costs, and built an Indian
brand .For that incident, he also answered to the Enquiry
Commission.
During 1960 to 1980 Bajaj Scooters has ruled Indian market in Sales.
In the time of late 1980‟s and early 1990,s foreign investments in get
increased, Japan produced and exported Bikes (Motorcycles) all over
the world. People started showing more interest in buying the bikes
rather than scooter. So, Bajaj partnered with Kawasaki and started to
19
produce their first motorcycle model Kawasaki Bajaj 100 (KB100)
and then followed by KB125
Bajaj has entered the global market at the time of early 90‟s; they
highly focused on the globalization and liberalization. To achieve this,
they focused on the specialization by making the product production
in narrow path , thus they reduced the scooter production and entered
in the motorcycle production as the world market as well as people
encouraged motorcycles than scooters .
In 2000, the Bajaj group saw several splits up within their family.
Rahul Bajaj‟s brother Shishir Bajaj and nephew Kushagra took
independent charge of Bajaj Hindustan and Bajaj Consumer Care.
Rajiv
Bajaj and his brother Sanjiv took over Bajaj Holdings and
Investments Ltd., the former got the auto business, and the latter
finance.
In the Beginning of 2000, the competition in the bike market has been
increased. Bajaj need to compete with Hero-Honda, TVS and other
Foreign Brands. The 100 cc bikes produced by Hero-Honda
especially (Splendor Model) and 350 cc foreign brand bikes (Royal
Enfield) dominated in Indian market. To face this Challenge , in 2001
Bajaj came up with a new idea of producing 150CC with DTSI
Engine Configuration Bikes with new logo , symbol and brand line
and that model is BAJAJ PULSAR . In 2001, only 12000 Pulsar
bikes had sold. But, due to effective marketing strategy and good
20
customer feedback increased the sale of Pulsar bikes to 300000 in
2002.
