Once upon a time a rich shoe style originated in Rajasthan which was limited to the
feet of nobles and royals and was named Nagra. Given the proximity of two states, the
news and craftsmen of this beautiful handcrafted footwear travelled north, to the rich
state of Punjab, and a new twist and name was given to it i.e. Jutti. The word Jutti
“Jutti” (also spelled as Jhutti, Juthi, Juti) is an Urdu word for a shoe with a closed
upper attached to a sole. The making of, now also famous as Mojaris and Khussa, the
Punjabi Jutti has been practised in Patiala for last 300 years by Raijer Mochis (cobblers)
who migrated from Sikal and Shikawat regions of Rajasthan. Traditionally crafted out
of the raw tanned animal skin, the craftsmen of this exquisite footwear were
considered untouchables and were confined to the outskirts of the town, where they
would work with harmony and diversify the roles for proper execution. The men of
“Chamar” community were responsible for processing the raw hides, drying and
colouring was left for the people of “Rangaar” community and the women folk of
“Mochi” community handled the delicate work of embroidery, embellishment and
stitching the pieces together.

Here are few special features of jutttis-

1. Totally handcrafted and versatile.

2. There is no left or right distinction

3. Overtime Juttis take shape of the foot.

4. They usually have flat sole, and are similar in design for both women and men.

5. Juttis do not weigh more than a beach flip-flop

The earliest design of Jutti made for kings and queens incorporated pure animal skin
hide and embellishments or embroidery done with pure silver and gold. However, with
the passage of time and rising demand Juttis now are made with Rexine and other
similar looking artificial products. There is no change or dearth of embellishments
though, infact with time this footwear has gone far beyond Punjab borders to reach the
hands of many designers and craftsmen of other regions. With each touch, many new
variants and designs have evolved so far.

Here are some of the new and old kinds of juttis easily available in market these days-

1. Salem Shahi Juttis- This kind comes with a pointed or curled toe with a spade
shaped sole and is famous amongst men folk as it’s named after the Famous
