North-South

- The poor of the global south are exploited by the rich of the global north. Natural resources and cheap labor are
abundant in the global south. Both are exploited by the North's industrialized countries. The South manufactures primary
goods, whereas the North manufactures manufactured goods. In general, manufactured goods cost more to purchase than
raw materials. The South will always be dependent on the North until it produces its own manufactured goods. To put it
another way, both global north and global south countries are dependent on each other. For example, Japan, a global north
country, lacks raw materials that can be found in the Philippines, a global south country. Japan has large mining
companies in the Philippines, and Japan pays the Philippines.
INSTRUCTIONS. Choose a city or town in the Philippines where you can observe or
experience the Global North and the Global South. List down the specific scenarios of the
youth experiences in these cities.
 Makati (Global North)
People in Makati basically grow up in a highly
cosmopolitan area, and they develop a sense of urbanity
at a young age. People in Makati, I believe, have a
certain amount of materialism in their blood. Also,
there are malls and grocery stores everywhere.
The standard of living is quite high, and even if you are
an undergraduate, you can still make more money than
other workers. There are numerous schools in the area.
Education is right around the corner.
They don't have much of a problem with a lack of
goods because there are malls and grocery stores
everywhere, and their standard of living is quite high.
Also, Makati can receive help and recover quickly if
something bad happens.
Maguindanao (Global South)
Most communities in Maguindanao and the neighboring
provinces of central Mindanao have become
accustomed to recurrent displacement. There’s no
nearest malls too.
The standard of leaving is cheap but needs hard works.
Also, students are having a hard time in their education.
Sometimes, they have to continue their learning, even
in evacuation sites.
Dry commodities (noodles, rice, and canned goods)
continue to be the only source of food and livelihood
assistance. More nutritious food is required.
