[QG15] PRECAUTIONS
Precautions
SRS Airbag • Pretensioner Seatbelt
WARNING:
To install/remove the SRS airbag, pretensioner seatbelt system related components and harness,
turn the ignition switch “OFF”, disconnect the battery terminals and wait over 3 minutes. (This is
to discharge all the remaining electricity in the airbag sensor unit’s auxiliary power circuit.)
Do not use air impact or electrical tools when installing/removing the components.
Do not use any hand-held tools for harness used in SRS airbag and pretensioner seatbelt systems.
Be careful with the harness not to tangle with or interfere with other components.
Do not use any electrical test equipments such as circuit tester when inspecting the SRS airbag
and pretensioner seatbelt circuit while installed unless the Service Manual instructs to do so. (The
weak current in the tester can cause the SRS airbag to operate.)
Do not insert any foreign materials such as a screwdriver in the airbag module and pretensioner
seatbelt connector in order to prevent unintended operation due to static electricity.
The harnesses used in SRS airbag and pretensioner are covered with yellow insulation for easy
identification.
Refer to “RS Restraint System” in this Service Manual for safe airbag system service information.

Service Operation
Even when the ignition switch is turned off, the control unit
may be damaged due to battery power. Be sure to turn the
ignition switch off and disconnect the negative battery ter-
minal before performing any installation/removal on the con-
trol unit harness.

For lever lock type control unit harness removal, disconnect

the connector by lifting the lever to A-direction as illustrated.

To install, place the lever to B-direction until it clicks in.

EC-4
PRECAUTIONS [QG15]

When connecting or disconnecting terminal connectors, take

care not to damage the connector terminals. Check the ter-
minals for any bends or damages before installation.

Before replacing the control unit, check if terminals are work-

ing normally by testing the input/output signals.
See “ECCS Control Unit Input/Output Signal Reference” (EC-37).

When measuring with circuit tester, the tester probes may con-
tact each other if they are too close. If the tester probes come in
contact each other, it may cause circuit overheating and may
damage the power transistor inside the control unit due to bat-
tery voltage. Allow distance between the tester probes.
To check the control unit’s input/output signals, use desig-
nated check adaptor.

GENERAL INSPECTION [QG15]

Idle RPM and Ignition Timing

IDLE RPM STANDARD (AFTER WARM-UP)

Transaxle Manual Automatic

Idle RPM (Shift lever in N or P position) (A/C on) 630 ± 50 700 ± 50
(800) (850)
Ignition Timing (° BTDC/RPM) 2 ± 2/630 10 ± 2/700

Engine should be under no loads of A/C, power steering pump and other electrical equipment. In-
spect while shift lever is in N or P position.

When using CONSULT-II

1. Run the engine sufficiently.
2. Connect CONSULT-II to the vehicle’s diagnosis connector
(driver side instrumental panel).
3. Select “ENGINE SPEED” from DATA MONITOR and check if
the idle RPM is at 630 ± 50 RPM for manual transaxle and
700 ± 50 RPM for automatic transaxle.
CAUTION:
Perform “Fast TAS Learning” (EC-12) if the idle RPM is
out of standard.
Without using CONSULT-II
1. Connect an induction (current detection) type tachometer at
No. 1 cylinder’s primary wire to inspect idle RPM.
The primary wire of No. 1 cylinder is for RPM and ignition
timing detection and longer than other wires with roof shape.
2. Check if the idle RPM is 630 ± 50 RPM for manual transaxle
and 700 ± 50 RPM for automatic transaxle.
CAUTION:
Perform “Fast TAS Learning” (EC-12) if the idle RPM is
out of standard.
IGNITION TIMING INSPECTION
1. Connect the timing light on primary wire of No. 1 cylinder.
The primary wire of No. 1 cylinder is longer than other
wires with roof shape.

EC-11
[QG15] GENERAL INSPECTION

2. Check if the ignition timing and idle RPM is 2 ± 2° BTDC/630

RPM for manual transaxle and 10 ± 2° BTDC/700 RPM for
automatic transaxle.
3. Check if the ignition timing is advancing smoothly when raced
the engine.

CAUTION:
Perform “Fast TAS Learning” (EC-12) if the idle RPM is
out of standard.

CO AND HC INSPECTION
CO and HC concentration adjustment is not needed because
the oxygen feedback system with learning function is adopted.
Warn up the engine sufficiently and check if idle RPM and
ignition timing falls within the standard value. Then measure
CO and HC values.
If the values are out of the standard range, inspect the oxy-
gen feedback conditions.

When using CONSULT-II

1. Select “HO2S1 (B1)” from DATA MONITOR.
2. Check if the voltage varies between 0 and 1 volt while the
engine speed is 2,000 RPM.

Without using CONSULT-II

Using a multimeter, check if the voltage at the oxygen sen-
sor output signal wire varies between 0 and 1 volt.
Refer to “ECCS Control Unit Input/Output Signal Reference”
(EC-37).

Fast TAS Learning

GENERAL
When replacing any of the AAC valve, throttle chamber or ECCS
control unit, the minimum air amount for the idle RPM should be
learned to control the idle RPM. Thus fast TAS learning is per-
formed. Also, when idle RPM or ignition timing is out of the stan-
dard range, a fast TAS learning works like IAS idle RPM control.

LEARNING OPERATION
1. Turn the ignition switch on for over 1 second. Then turn the
ignition switch off and stay on it for 10 seconds. (AAC valve
initialization). Refer to “AAC Valve Initialization” (EC-13).

EC-12
GENERAL INSPECTION [QG15]

2. Run the engine sufficiently. (Coolant temperature at over 70°C)

3. Engine should be under no loads of A/C, power steering pump
and other electrical equipment in N or P position.
4. Perform as below under idle RPM.
When using CONSULT-II
1. Press “START” after selecting “IDLE AIR VOL LEARN-SVC”
from “ACTIVE TEST”.
CAUTION:
Do not turn the ignition switch off until the learning ends.
It takes about 20 seconds.
The “FINISHED” comes on when learning is finished.
2. Check idle air volume learning from the Data Monitor.
Learning: Completed
3. Check if idle RPM and ignition timing falls within the stan-
dard value.
4. If not within the standard value, perform fast TAS learning again.
CAUTION:
Select “IDLE AIR VOL LEARN-FAC” in “ACTIVE TEST”, and
start “TAS learning” after replacing engine assembly.
Without using CONSULT-II
1. Remove the throttle position sensor harness connector
(brown).
2. Connect the connector within 5 seconds after removal.
3. Perform the learning as in the above steps.

CAUTION:
Do not turn the ignition switch off until the learning ends.
It takes about 20 seconds.
4. Check if the idle RPM and ignition timing falls within the stan-
dard value.
5. If not within the standard value, perform fast TAS learning again.

AAC VALVE INITIALIZATION

Every time when the ignition switch is turned off, AAC valve
will be initialized for 10 seconds automatically.

CAUTION:
Do not remove the battery, AAC valve connector and con-
trol unit connector within 10 seconds after turning off
the ignition switch.
If any of them is removed within 10 seconds, turn the
ignition switch to ON for over 1 second after connecting
the connector and let the ignition switch to off for about
10 seconds.
Also if the AAC valve system and engine control system
fuses get opened, or stop the engine immediately after
starting or idle RPM is unstable, turn the ignition switch
to ON for over 1 second and then let the ignition switch
to off for about 10 seconds.

EC-13
[QG15] GENERAL INSPECTION

EC-15
[QG15] TROUBLE DIAGNOSIS
Trouble Diagnosis
Trouble Diagnosis Procedure
1. The most important thing for trouble diagnosis is to under-
stand the vehicle’s system (control system and mechanical
systems) thoroughly.
The ECCS engine controls actuators such as injectors and
ignition coils based on the information from the sensors. Ac-
cording to operations of those actuators, the engine (mechani-
cal system) runs and its continuously changing operations
will be sent to the control unit through sensors. A thorough
understanding about these cycles is necessary.
2. Verify the customer’s complaints before performing any in-
spection.
In order to do this, you need to duplicate or simulate the
symptom and fully understand the symptom.
Isolate the possible causes and sometimes checking by riding
with the client may be necessary.
CAUTION:
Never underestimate the customer by saying, “The cus-
tomer will probably say this” or “The customer is prob-
ably saying about this symptoms”.
3. In order to fix the troubles, you need to first identify the symp-
toms.
For the intermittent symptoms, duplicate or simulate them
based on questions and answers and previous service data.
Sometimes, shaking the harness or connector could be a good
way to duplicate or simulate the intermittent symptom. If a
technician go on repairing or replacing without identifying
symptoms based on his/her own judgment, it will not result
in correct or permanent fix.
4. The next important point is to identify whether the problem
cause is in ECCS control unit system or in mechanical sys-
tems (such as engine assembly or supporting systems). It is
important to determine the cause using the CONSULT-II or
by inspecting the ECCS control unit’s input/output signals.
When inspecting input/output signal of the ECCS control unit,
connect check adaptor to the control unit to prevent poor
proving connections.
5. It is useful to refer to the input/output signal reference in this
section to determine if the ECCS control unit’s input and out-
put signals are normal. If difficult to determine, it is useful to
compare with the data taken out from the same other ve-
hicle under similar circumstances. Thus, it is helpful for you
to store a lot of normal data for your trouble diagnosis.

EC-16
TROUBLE DIAGNOSIS [QG15]

Diagnostic Flow
There are thousands of different trouble symptoms. So, there couldn’t be a uniform troubleshooting
method. And your technique and experience also affects on trouble diagnosis.
However, there could be uniform procedures regardless of different trouble symptoms. Please follow
the flowchart below for trouble diagnosis.

Questionnaire
GENERAL
In order to determine the trouble symptom, it is necessary to
ask questions on customer’s concern.
Above questions are very important to identify the symptom
and isolate the cause.
It is good to use the questionnaire to avoid trouble with cus-
tomers.

Self-Diagnosis (Without Using CONSULT-II)

GENERAL
Self-diagnosis is the function that stores defective system to
the control unit. If a system fulfills self-diagnosis conditions due
to defective sensors, actuators or emission control system, it
will be stored in the control unit for easy diagnosis. The results
of self-diagnosis will be displays by CONSULT-II.
The engine malfunction warning light cannot display the self-
diagnosis results (code number).

BULB CHECK
It comes on when ignition switch is turned to ON (engine not
running) and goes out if engine starts.

MALFUNCTION WARNING
When malfunction is detected, the engine malfunction warn-
ing light in the meter cluster comes on to warn the driver.
The engine malfunction warning light has respective trip 1
and trip 2 items. The items included in trip 2 will not come
on in the trip 1.

CONSULT-II Data Monitor Reference

 Use the data reference only.
The data in the table is the input value to and output value from ECCS control unit, so may not
correspond with actual operation of the component. (Example: When ignition timing is checked by
timing light, it may different from “ignition timing” in data monitor. This is because the “ignition
timing” is calculated by ECCS control unit based on the input signals from POS sensor or other
ignition related sensors).

[QG15] TROUBLE DIAGNOSIS

Fail-Safe Functions
Fail-safe function is the function that controls the vehicle to be drivable when trouble occurs in the main
sensors based on the preset values by estimating the driving conditions from other input signals.
Sensor Trouble Fail-safe Warning
Driving is available by using engine RPM and fuel
injection pulse width depending on throttle opening
angle.
Air flow meter -
However, fuel cut occurs at approx. 2,400 RPM.
Idle RPM will set to 1,000 RPM (800 RPM for
other than N and P positions).

conditions
At this time, the radiator fan relay is turned ON.

Diving is available by advancing ignition timing

Knock sensor -
within the knock control range.
It determines the idle RPM according to Tp and
Throttle position sensor engine RPM. Driving is available by fixing the -
output value to a certain value.

REFERENCE:
When both air flow meter and throttle position sensor are defective, idle RPM will be deter-
mined by No. 43 terminal [throttle valve switch (idle)] in the control unit. And driving is avail-
able by using fuel injection pulse width that changes by the status of switch (ON or OFF).
However, fuel cut occurs at approx. 2,400 RPM.
