Virginia Woolf, a writer and feminist, led a troubled but creative life in England. Woolf was described by
many as a brilliant, beautiful woman with a bright character. However, she suffered from serious depression,
__31__. In 1941, Woolf killed herself by jumping into a river with her pockets filled with stones.
Born in 1882, Woolf lived in a time when women had limited legal and social rights in England such as
being unable to get certain jobs or difficulty in getting an education, __32__. Two of her most important
writings were A Room of One’s Own and Three Guineas. In A Room of One’s Own, Woolf points out the
discrimination that female authors faced, __33__. Three Guineas presents three questions—why it is difficult
for women to get an education, __34__.
After her death, __35__. Her progressive thinking and descriptions of the poor treatment of women have
had a great impact on how future generations think about feminism and equal rights for men and women.

(B)In 1997, a new toy fad swept the United States. After runaway success in Japan, tiny, cleverly packaged,
hand-held electronic toys called virtual pets became a craze in America. It didn’t take long for imitators (仿冒
者) to hit the market, broadening the variety and increasing availability of the virtual, or cyber-, pets. The toys
3
were so popular, and the demand so great, stores had trouble keeping them on the shelves.
Just like real pets, digital pets required loving care from their owners. They had to be kept happy and
healthy and needed food, exercise, and a lot of attention. They also had to be put to bed at night and awakened
again each morning. If they did not receive discipline they could become ill-mannered. The more they were
neglected, the more they beeped. If virtual pets were ignored completely, they died. But with the push of a
reset button, their cyber-life resumed right away and they came alive all over again.
Because virtual pets were no bigger than a pocket watch, their owners took them everywhere. This
attachment to the toys caused problems in some schools and summer camps. Some people were forming close
bonds with their pets and students were asked to leave them at home. Some pet owners hired their parents to
care of their pets while they were away.
Of course virtual pets are only a part of the increasing desire for interactive toys and games. As the craze
dies down and something new becomes the big rage they will take their place on the fusty shelves with other
favorite toys.
(C)Scientists have imagined for decades about a future when robots will take over daily household chores
and give us more leisure time. Yet the types of robots introduced to the market so far have been more for
entertainment than for practical uses.
But, the consumer market for robots appears to be changing for the better, though it’s a slow change at
best. Thanks to the lower costs and the improved performance of mass-produced computers, some small
companies are starting to offer consumer robots that can clean and maintain a household. The problem is that
these products can attract only those consumers who are already crazy about robots, so the market remains too
small. And as far as performance and price are concerned, they’re still no match for conventional appliances
(日常家電用品).
One company that has enjoyed some early success is Friendly Robotics. Last year, this company began
selling a lawn-mowing robot called the Robomower. The battery-powered device does its job by moving
randomly (任意地) over the lawn. It takes a lot longer than a conventional lawnmower to get the job done, but
at least it frees weekends for its owner.
Some other companies are also promoting their robots for different purposes. Probotics is selling its
vacuum-cleaner robots. And iRobot intends to start selling a home-security robot next year for about the cost of
a notebook computer.
4
However, their appeal so far has been limited to robot fans and wealthy consumers. Experts have noted
that cheaper, conventional lawnmowers operated by humans still achieve better results than robots, and
vacuum-cleaner robots tend to have trouble moving around furniture, cats and stairways. Even iRobot admits
that a home-security robot can’t take the place of a household alarm system.
