IV、Reading Comprehension(2% × 15)

(A)Ancient Egyptians’ fascination with life after death contributed to the construction of the pyramids.
Most of these massive tombs for Egyptian rulers were built about 4,500 years ago. Of all the pyramids, the
Great Pyramid of Khufu is believed to be the most magnificent one. Built around 2560 B.C. over a period of
twenty years, King Khufu’s pyramid remains an unsolved mystery. People wonder how such huge blocks of
stone were moved and lifted without the use of modern technology. One theory suggests that they might have
constructed straight or spiral ramps, which were raised as the construction proceeded. Coated with mud and
water, these ramps could ease the displacement of the blocks. Another theory is that these blocks might have
been transported and placed using long levers (槓桿). Whatever the methods they applied, the Great Pyramid is
proved to be a giant structure with incredible precision. All of the interior stones fit so well that even a card
won’t fit between them. And each side of the pyramid is oriented exactly in accordance with the compass (羅
盤) directions. Another pyramid that attracts equal admiration is that of King Tutankhamen around 1300 B.C.
Though insignificant in size, the gold and other jewelry found in his tomb are among the finest treasure ever
found. Nowadays, those pyramids, located mostly in the south of Cairo, have become the chief moneymakers
for the Egyptian government.

36、The pyramids were built ______.

(D) was built one thousand years earlier
40、Which of the following statements is CORRECT?
(A) Tourists are not allowed to place their cards between the blocks of stone.
(B) Each side of the Great Pyramid faces true north, south, east, and west.
(C) The pyramids could not have been built without utilizing modern techniques.
(D) Scientists have clear proofs that ramps and levers were in wide use in constructing the pyramids.

(B)In 1997, a new toy fad swept the United States. After runaway success in Japan, tiny, cleverly packaged,
hand-held electronic toys called virtual pets became a craze in America. It didn’t take long for imitators (仿冒
者) to hit the market, broadening the variety and increasing availability of the virtual, or cyber-, pets. The toys
3
were so popular, and the demand so great, stores had trouble keeping them on the shelves.
Just like real pets, digital pets required loving care from their owners. They had to be kept happy and
healthy and needed food, exercise, and a lot of attention. They also had to be put to bed at night and awakened
again each morning. If they did not receive discipline they could become ill-mannered. The more they were
neglected, the more they beeped. If virtual pets were ignored completely, they died. But with the push of a
reset button, their cyber-life resumed right away and they came alive all over again.
Because virtual pets were no bigger than a pocket watch, their owners took them everywhere. This
attachment to the toys caused problems in some schools and summer camps. Some people were forming close
bonds with their pets and students were asked to leave them at home. Some pet owners hired their parents to
care of their pets while they were away.
Of course virtual pets are only a part of the increasing desire for interactive toys and games. As the craze
dies down and something new becomes the big rage they will take their place on the fusty shelves with other
favorite toys.

(B) Not until 1997 did the fad sweep America.

have to buy a new set of toy.

(A) Artificial pets needed food and exercise.
(B) Artificial pets would get sick.
(C) Artificial pets had to be awakened up and put to bed.
(D) Artificial pets would not become ill-mannered since they were merely machines.
43、As you can infer from the passage, which problem CANNOT be caused by the new type of toy?
(A) Student owners might spend too much time taking care of their .
(B) Some people might have so close bonds with their pets that they couldn’t have normal life.
(C) The toys was too expensive to get, so many young people would steal money from their parents
in order to get one.
(D) Parents of some pet owners might have to take care of the pets while their children were away.
44、Which of the following is an OPINION?
(A) In 1997, a new toy fad swept the United States.
(B) Because virtual pets were no bigger than a pocket watch, their owners took them everywhere.

(C)Scientists have imagined for decades about a future when robots will take over daily household chores
and give us more leisure time. Yet the types of robots introduced to the market so far have been more for
entertainment than for practical uses.
But, the consumer market for robots appears to be changing for the better, though it’s a slow change at
best. Thanks to the lower costs and the improved performance of mass-produced computers, some small
companies are starting to offer consumer robots that can clean and maintain a household. The problem is that
these products can attract only those consumers who are already crazy about robots, so the market remains too
small. And as far as performance and price are concerned, they’re still no match for conventional appliances
(日常家電用品).
One company that has enjoyed some early success is Friendly Robotics. Last year, this company began
selling a lawn-mowing robot called the Robomower. The battery-powered device does its job by moving
randomly (任意地) over the lawn. It takes a lot longer than a conventional lawnmower to get the job done, but
at least it frees weekends for its owner.
Some other companies are also promoting their robots for different purposes. Probotics is selling its
vacuum-cleaner robots. And iRobot intends to start selling a home-security robot next year for about the cost of
a notebook computer.

4
However, their appeal so far has been limited to robot fans and wealthy consumers. Experts have noted
that cheaper, conventional lawnmowers operated by humans still achieve better results than robots, and
vacuum-cleaner robots tend to have trouble moving around furniture, cats and stairways. Even iRobot admits
that a home-security robot can’t take the place of a household alarm system.

(A) giving people pleasure (B) doing household chores
(C) saving our time (D) reducing living expenses
47、Some companies have begun to produce robots for doing household chores as a result of ______.
(A) keen competition for the market (B) a rapid increase in the number of customers
(C) enthusiastic responses from the users (D) cheaper and more efficient computers
48、Household-chore robots are still not popular everywhere, because ______.
(A) they are too difficult to operate (B) they are neither cheap not efficient
(C) their shapes are not attractive (D) their noise disturbs the neighbors
49、One benefit of the Robomower is that ______.
(A) it saves energy by using batteries
(B) it is more efficient than a conventional lawnmower
(C) it allows its owner to enjoy his or her weekends
(D) it goes straight from one end of the lawn to the other
50、Given the present state of robot technology, scientists’ dreams about robots ______.
(A) have appealed to a great many people (B) have been partially realized
(C) have completely failed to materialize (D) have finally come true
