Introductory Message

For the facilitator:

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and evaluated by the


Development and Quality Assurance Teams of SDO TAPAT to assist you in helping the
learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while overcoming their
personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.

As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module. You
also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to manage their
own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist the learners as
they do the tasks included in the module.

For the learner:

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful opportunities for
guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You will be enabled to
process the contents of the learning resource while being an active learner.

The following are some reminders in using this module:

LESSON 1: Ancient paintings (PRE-HISTORIC ERA and
EGYPTIAN)

 Analyse art elements and principles in the production of work following the
style of a western and classical art.
 Identify distinct characteristics of arts during the different art periods

IV. Brief Introduction


Paintings from the Pre-historic Era
Their paintings were found inside the caves which may have been their
way of communicating with each other. It may also be for religious or
ceremonial purposes. These paintings may be more an artifact of the
archaeological evidence than a true picture of humans’ first created art.
Prehistoric drawings of animals were usually correct in proportion.
Paintings from Ancient Egypt
The purpose of Egyptian paintings is to make the deceased afterlife
place pleasant. With this in mind, themes include journey to the underworld
introducing the deceased to the gods of the underworld by their protective
deities.
It emphasizes the importance of life after death and the preservation of the
knowledge of the past.
Most paintings were highly stylize, symbolic, and shows profile view
of an animal or a person. The main colors used were red, black, blue, gold
and green taken derived from mineral pigments that can withstand strong
sunlight without fading.

Definition of important words:

Pre-historic art is all produced in preliterate, pre-historical cultures


beginning in every late geological history, and generally
continuing until that culture either develops writing or other
methods of record keeping, or make significant contact with
another culture that has, and that makes some record of major
historical events.
The characteristics of Egyptian art are a combination of geometric
regularity and keen observation of nature. Their art were classified
into three: first art used in the home-furniture, jewelry, musical
instruments and many more, second art used in the dead – tombs,
masks mummy cases, and wrapping for the body, third art was
created for the gods and their priest and kings-in temples,
paintings, statues.

Byzantine Painting
The lively styles of paintings which had been invented in Greek
and Rome lived on in Byzantium but this time for Christian subjects.
Romanesque Painting
These are largely placed mosaics on the walls of the churches that
follows a strict frontal pose.
Paintings from the Gothic Era
Paintings have been confined in the illumination of manuscript
pages and the painting of frescoes on the walls of churches in
cosmopolitan style, elegant, mannered and sophisticated.

Definition of important words:

Byzantine art is the art of the Greek-speaking Byzantine


Empire formed after the division of the Roman Empire between
Eastern and Western halves, and sometimes of parts of Italy under
Byzantine
Romanesque art developed in the period between about 1000 to the
rise of Gothic art in the 12th century, in conjunction with the rise of
monasticism in Western Europe. The style developed initially in
France, but spread to Christian Spain, England, Flanders, Germany,
Italy, and elsewhere to become the first medieval style found all over
Europe, though with regional differences.
The Gothic period coincided with a greatly increased emphasis on the
Virgin Mary, and it was in this period that the Virgin and Child
became such a hallmark of Catholic art.
