1. Which factors decide the development of a country ?
- Its per capita income
- Its average literacy level

2. Which of the following neighbouring countries has better performance in terms of HDI
than India? And the neighbouring country very close to India in terms of HDI ?
- The rank of our country India is 130 as per HDI.
- Srilanka ( Rank76) is ahead of India.

3. What are ‘economic activities’?
- The economic activities mean the activities that are concerned with earning income.
For example, people work at firms , agriculture doing business etc but the same work performed
by the same passion may not be economic activity. For example, hiring a woman as a cook is an
example of undertaking economic activities.
4. What is the Literacy Rate?
- The literacy rate means the proportion of the literate population in the 7 and above age group.
5. What do you mean by Public Facilities?
- Public facilities mean those facilities which are provided by the government for the social
and economic benefits. These include schools, colleges, medical development of individual centres,
transport, ration shop maintenance of law and order etc.
6. What is HDR?
- The Human Development Report(HDR) published by UNDP compares the overall development of
a nation or a state using three qualitative factors like better healthcare, improved education, and

- The human development index consists of three factors like life expectancy at birth
( health Status) ,Gross National Income (GNI) and Mean years of schooling of people

8. What do you mean by the word ‘Sustainable’?
- ‘Sustainable ‘ means the ability to be sustained for a long time.
9. What are development goals?
- Development goals are wishes and aspirations which various individuals aspire for an economy .
These goals vary from individual to individual - what may be development for one may not be
development for the other, rather it can be destructive.
10. What is a Public Distribution System ?
- The Public Distribution system is a strategy taken by the government to ensure basic nutrition to
its citizens, especially the ‘Low income’ or ‘Below poverty line’ categories.

- HDI stands for Human Development Index as given in the ‘Human Development Report’.

- Development refers to the achievement of aspirations and wishes of an individual or a nation.

- Economic development of a country is measured on the basis of its national income and per capita
income.
15. Why do people look at a mix of goals for development?
- People look at a mix of goals for development because they want more income along with
respect, dignity, safety, security, pollution free environment etc.

- More days of work and better wages are the developmental goals of a landless rural labour.

- Industrialists, for their electricity requirement may want more dams , but that may displace poor
people in the surroundings.

- Level of education- gross enrollment ratio is another criterion which may reflect levels of
development.

- Clean drinking water, health facilities,etc. Are non material benefits that increase welfare of the

- The World Bank uses the income criterion i.e. per capita income to compare
countries.
21. Why is per capita income counted in dollars rather than our rupee?
- Per capita of different countries is calculated in dollars & not in their own currencies because the
dollar has been the strongest & stablest currency since the end of the 2nd world War & it becomes
easy to compare the per capita income of various countries when these are converted into
a common currency.
22. Why fewer girls in the age group 10- 14 years attend school in rural areas than
boys.
- It is because community negligence or rural people do not give importance to girl education.

Report.
- The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) publishes a Human Development Report
every year.

- There were 189 countries for which HDI was calculated in the Human Development Report, 2018.
25. Can there be any development without overuse of natural resources?
- Yes, sustainable development is a way to develop without overuse of natural resources.

- It is the total value of all final goods & services produced within a country plus net income from
transactions like (export & import) with other countries.

- It indicates the number of children that die before the age of 1 year as a proportion of
1000 live children born in that particular year.

- Two goals of development other than income are-
- Equal treatment
- Improvement in standard of living.

- An organisation which conducts surveys & presents statistical data of the economy like national
- income, proportion of population, GDP etc.
30. Define Net Attendance Ratio?
- It is the total number of children of age group 6 to 10 attending school as a% of total
number of children in the same age group.
31. What is BMI?
- BMI stands for body Mass Index. It is calculated by dividing the weight of a person in kilograms
(KGs) by the square of his /her height in metres. It is an indicator of the level of nourishment in
adults.
32. What is PPP?
- PPP (Purchase Power Parity) is a popular metric used by macroeconomic analysis that compares
different countries' currencies through a basket of goods approach.Purchase power parity
allows for economists to compare economic productivity & standards of living between countries.
33. Define infrastructure?
- Availability of roads, bridges, power, health, education facilities etc in an economy.

comparing two or more counties/ societies?
- The other property of income which is important for comparison of two or more societies is
distribution of income. Per capita income does not indicate the distribution of income among
different sections of society.

- Health means a state of complete physical, mental & social condition.

- The rate of % of people aged 15 & above who can understand, read & write a short & simple
statement in their everyday life.

- Some people oppose dams because it will disrupt their lives & submerge their own lands.

- Their dignity will increase in the house & society.

- The countries with per capita income US dollar more than 12,056 called rich or high income
countries.
- The countries with per capita income US dollar 955 or less are called poor or low income
countries.
40. Name the type of things on which the quality of our life depends?
- Material & non material are the two things on which the quality of our life depends.
41. Why is groundwater overused? Can there be development without overuse?
- The groundwater is overused due to rapidly increasing population , agricultural advancement &
urbanisation. Moreover people use it carelessly in their routine activities .
- Yes, development can take place without overuse as groundwater is a renewable resource.
However conservation measures such as planting more trees creating more reservoirs etc. need
to be implemented.
42. India has to import crude oil- what problems do you anticipate for the country looking at
this situation.
- India has to import crude oil because it does not have enough of its own. The demand for oil is
increasing day by day so are the prices. As a result import of crude oil is expected to become a
burden for India.
43. Find the difference between GDP & GNP?
- GNP (Gross Domestic Products) = GDP plus net income receipts from assets abroad less
income of foreign nationals within the country.
- GNI ( Gross national Income)- =GDP plus payments by foreign nationals into the country for
such things as investments 9Interests & dividends) less similar payments paid out of the country.

- GNI is the sum of the value added by resident producers plus any product taxes & minus
subsidies not included in the valuation of output plus net receipts of primary income

- Average no of completed years of education of a country’s population aged 25 years & above,
excluding years spent repeating individuals grades.

$1820per annum.
