18.16 Salient Observations:

18.16.1 Engine performance:

i) The backup torque of engine is 8.53 %, under natural ambient
condition.

ii) The maximum power was observed as 7.3 kW & 7.1 kW under
natural & high ambient condition respectively.

iii) The specific fuel consumption corresponding to maximum power and

rated power was recorded as 277 g/kWh against the declared value of
280 g/kWh and same is observed in the rated power also.

iv) The maximum torque was recorded as 22.9 Nm against declared

value of 24.5 Nm under natural ambient condition.

18.16.2 Rotary shaft performance:

i) The maximum and rated rotary shaft power was measured as 6.0 kW
respectively.
ii) The specific fuel consumption corresponding to power at rated engine
speed was measured as 299 g/kWh against the declared value of
290 g/kWh.
iii) The maximum equivalent rotary shaft torque was observed as 224.6
Nm against the declared value of 230 Nm.
18.16.3 Mechanical vibration:
The amplitude of mechanical vibration on most of controls /
measuring points of the power tiller exceeded the limit of 100 micron.
The mechanical vibration is directly concerned with Operator‟s
Health, Safety and Comfort; apart from the useful life of the
machine‟s components. In view of the above, this should be taken
care for corrective action.
18.16.4 Noise measurement:
Max. Noise at operator‟s ear level and by stander‟s position was
observed as 98 dB (A) and 83 dB (A). The noise observed at
operator's ear level is more than the limit specified by IS 12239
(Part3) : 1988. The Sound Pressure Level is directly influencing the
Operator‟s Health, Safety and Comfort; and therefore warrants the
corrective action.

18.16.5 Haulage test

18.16.5.1 The power tiller was recommended for haulage test with a trailer of
gross mass of 1.0 tonne.
18.16.5.2 Distance traveled per litre was observed 12.15 to 12.30 km.
18.16.5.3 Specific fuel consumption was observed 81.30 to 82.30 cc/km/t.
18.16.6 Wetland cultivation (Puddling test) :
18.18.6.1 Puddling test was conducted with cage wheels and with hatchet blade.
18.16.6.2 The maneuverability of power tiller during puddling test was found
satisfactory.
18.16.6.3 On partial dismantling of the power tiller and inspection of the
lubricant samples from engine sump, clutch assembly, gear box,
chain case and rotary shaft housing, no entry of mud and/water was
observed.
18.16.7 Rotary blades:
i) The hourly rate of wear of blades for dry land and wet land
operations was observed as 0.07 to 0.28 percent and 0.06 to 0.11
percent respectively.
ii) Carbon and manganese content of hatchet blades does not conform to
IS 6690:1981 (Reaffirmed 2012). This should be looked into for
corrective action.
iii) The dimension of hatchet blades was not fully conforms to the
requirement of IS 6690:1981 (Reaffirmed 2012). This should be
looked into for corrective action.
iv) The hardness of hatchet blades does not conform the requirement of
IS 6690:1981 (reaffirmed 2012).
18.16.8 As per IS 12239 (Part 3) : 1988, “maximum safe speed” with trailer is
required to be specified by the manufacturer. Necessary action may
be taken in this regard.

18.16.9 As per IS 12239 (Part 3) : 1988, balancing mass to be added to

achieve correct weight balance of the power tiller with various
attachments should be recommended by the manufacturer in the
operator manual. This may be examined for compliance.
18.16.10 Provision of spark arresting device may be considered for
incorporation in the exhaust system.
