CIV3222: Text Improvement Exercise

Task: Refine the following text to a maximum of 130 words.

A number of factors relating to the original infrastructure were very

important in the design and eventual construction of the Sea Cliff Bridge.
The bridge was the final solution designed to replace the pre-existing
section of Lawrence Hargrave Drive that previously hugged the coastline.
The road section was over 400 m long and is part of the scenic coastal
road and popular tourist drive about 18.7 km long. It had a number of
issues, the most pertinent being that the poor rock quality resulted in
numerous rock falls and road closures since its construction during the
1870’s. The initial action on the replacement of the roadway had been
instigated in response to complaints about the prolonged road closures
from local residents and from travellers on the tourist road.

Other issues with the road section prior to the construction of the Sea
Cliff Bridge were to do with flooding from high waves and the projection
that the section had limited ability to cope with increased demand as
population and industry within the area was growing. The flooding in the
road section was associated with poor drainage systems and the
geometric nature of the road section.
