importantly, which appliances are right for cooking Brown Rice? White rice can be easily
cooked in stainless steel pots, pressure cooker and instant pots. But cooking Brown rice
could be trickier, because one small mistake and it could become a mushy and gooey
mess.

How do you ensure your Brown rice is fluffier as ever when you cook it in various
appliances? Don’t worry, we will tell you the detailed procedure to cook perfect fluffy
Brown Rice in different appliances.

So here goes -

Open Lid Stainless Steel Pot

This is a stainless steel vessel which is also called Patila in Northern India, Panai in
Tamil and Madake in Kannada. Although it is very simple to make rice in this container,
millennial might find it difficult to handle because they are accustomed to use automatic
devices. But believe me, after getting used to cooking Brown rice this way, you will
prefer using this method.
Procedure –
1. Fill 2/3rd of the stainless steel pot with water, and then put it on the gas stove
burner. Put the flame on high.
2. After you have put the water to boil, it is time to measure the rice. Take around
100-150 gms of Brown rice(for 3 servings), and then wash it under the a running
tap. After washing the rice, just fill the bowl containing rice with water and check
whether the water is clear. If the water is totally transparent then it means you
have rinsed the rice thoroughly. Otherwise, wash the rice once or twice so that it
is totally clean.
3. After washing the rice check whether the water in the pot has boiled or not. If the
water has started boiling on the surface, then it is time to put the rice.
4. After putting the rice inside the water, give it a stir. Add lemon juice or vinegar to
ensure the rice does not stick to the bottom. Keep on regularly stirring the rice
after every 2 minutes.
5. After 6-8 minutes, check the texture of rice by picking some grains out of the
boiling water. Check the softness of the rice grain. How soft is it? Is there any
hardness remaining in the grain of rice? The best way to check this is to bite or eat
the rice grain. You will get a good idea whether the rice has cooked or not.
6. After checking the grain of rice has cooked fully, then close the gas stove and
bring it under the sink and drain the water totally. Cover the rice pot with a piece
of cloth, preferably a muslin cloth piece.
7. After cooling the rice enough for eating, enjoy fluffy Brown rice. Serve it with
any dish you want to eat with it.

Pressure Cooker
It is another easy way to cook rice. All you have to do is be a bit careful on the way you
steam the rice inside it. Now, this version of the pressure cooker consists of a whistle on
the lid. This whistle allows the steam out of the vessel and is also an indicator for the
duration of steaming. The procedure for cooking Brown rice in the pressure cooker is
given below.
Procedure-
1. Wash the rice (around 150 gms, 3 servings) and put the pressure cooker on fire.
2. Put the rice inside it. Add water to the rice. The level of the water should be
around a centimeter or two above the level of rice. You can check by putting your
finger inside it. The level of water should not go over the first fold of the middle
finger. You can drizzle a bit of oil with vinegar or lemon juice so that the grains
of rice do not stick together.
3. After one whistle of the pressure cooker, your rice is cooked. If you want a harder
texture, then lift the whistle and allow the steam to escape. Otherwise, open the
pressure cooker lid after a minute or two, so that the texture becomes softer.

Rice Cooker
Rice cooker is a whistle-less appliance that allows you to cook rice in a simpler manner
than a pressure cooker or a stainless steel pot. You just have to set the timer accordingly.
Procedure-
1. The method of washing and the quantity of rice is same as in the previous method.
2. Put the Brown rice inside the rice cooker. Add water accordingly (around 15-20
ml). If you do not have a measuring cup, then add enough water to the rice so that
the level of water exceeds the rice level by one centimeter.
3. Cook the rice for 10-12 minutes. You will get a fluffy Brown Rice serving.
Instant Pot
Instant pot is the same appliance as a rice cooker. The mechanism is almost the same, so
the method is also the same as a rice cooker.

Microwave/OTG
This is by far the easiest way of cooking rice. I will not bore you any further by
elaborating the benefits of cooking in Microwave. But it is a tension free method and you
need not check the rice from time to time.
Procedure-
1. The quantity of rice and the washing method is same as the previous methods.
2. Put the rice in a Tupperware vessel of microwavable vessel. The water quantity is
same as in the Rice Cooker or Instant Pot.
3. Then press the rice button on the Microwave. If your Microwave has no such
settings then put it on convection heating for 15-20 minutes.
