ASSIGNMENT #2

DUE DATE: 20/04/22

ATTEMPT ALL QUESTIONS

1) A short braced column has to carry an ultimate axial load of 1366 kN. The
column size is 250 mm×250 mm. Find the steel area required for the longitudinal
reinforcement and select suitable bars. Calculate the maximum effective height
for the column if it is to be considered as a short column. The materials are grade
30 concrete and grade460 reinforcement.

2) A short braced reinforced concrete column supports an approximately

symmetrical arrangement of beams which result in a total vertical load of 1750kN
being applied to the column. Assuming the percentage of steel to be 1.5 %,
choose suitable dimensions for the column and the diameter of the main bars.
Use high tensile reinforcement in a square column. Use grade 40 concrete.

3) Design the reinforcement for the column section shown in Figure below
which is subjected to the following actions:
ultimate axial load N = 950 kN
ultimate moment Mx about X-X axis = 95 kN m
ultimate moment My about Y-Y axis = 65 kN m
The materials are grade 30 concrete and grade 460 reinforcement.
Assume the cover is 25 mm, links are 8 mm in diameter and main bars are 32 mm
in diameter.
