ASSIGNMENT #2:
DUE DATE: 02/07/21
1) A built-in beam of uniform section and of length l carries a load wich increases uniformly
from zero at each end to w per unit length at the centre. Determine the end fixing moments and

2) A rolled steel joist, 560 mm × 180 mm (I = 700 × 10 -6 m4) is used as a beam of 7.2 m
effective span, the ends being partially fixed. The load consists of a point load of 160 kN at the
centre of the span and a uniformly distributed load (including weight of the beam itself) of 60
kN. The rigidity of the end connections is such that the slope at the ends is 4 M × 10 -8 where M
is the end moment in N m. Calculate the value of the end moments. E = 200 GN/m2. [Ans. 70.43

3) Figure below shows a timbr beam which is designed to carry a maximum loading of 5
kN/m and a minimum loading of 1 kN/m. To calculate the maximum deflection of the cantilever
section of the beam, the loading is is located as shown. Calculate the end deflection of the
cantilever in terms of the flexural stiffness EI of the beam section. [Ans: 16.05𝐸𝐸𝐸𝐸]
4) Calculate the location of the point of maximum deflection of the beam shown in the
figure below and determine the maximum deflection. Take 𝐸𝐸𝐸𝐸 = 170 × 103 𝑘𝑘𝑘𝑘 𝑚𝑚2 .
[Ans: 26.52 mm at 10.05 metres from left support]
5) A horizontal propped cantilever of length L is securely fixed at one end and freely
supported at the other end and is subjected to a bending couple M in the vertical plane
containing the longitudinal axis of the beam. If the couple is applied about an axis 0.75L from
the fixed end of the cantilever, determine the end fixing moment and the reaction at the freely
supported end. [Ans: 1.406 𝑀𝑀𝐿𝐿 ; 0.406𝑀𝑀]
