ASSIGNMENT #1

ATTEMPT ALL QUESTIONS

DUE DATE: 01/02/22

1) The T-beam shown in Figure 1 is to be used as a simply supported beam

spanning 2 m. Determine the maximum uniformly distributed load that the beam
can carry if the compressive and tensile bending stresses are not to exceed 150
N/mm2 and 200 N/mm2, respectively.

2) a) A timber joist having a rectangular cross-section 100 mm wide by 200
mm deep is simply supported over a span of 6 m. Show that the maximum stress
in the timber is 13.50 N/mm2 when the beam carries a UDL of 2 kN/m over the
complete span.
b) To strengthen the beam. 100 mm x 5 mm thick steel plates are securely
attached to the side faces of the joist as illustrated in Figure 2. These plates
𝐸𝐸
extend over only the central 2.5 m of the 6 m span. If the modular ratio 𝑆𝑆 = 20,
𝐸𝐸𝑡𝑡
by what percentage may the original UDL of 2 kN/m be increased without the
timber stress exceeding the value given in part (a) of the question?
