CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter presents the related literature and studies after the thorough and in-

depth search done by the researchers. This part of the study considers the works that has

been published on a topic by scholars and researchers. Moreover, this part of the study

justifies the reason for this research.

One of the responsibilities of students is to focus on the studying; however, it is

usually difficult to those students to have a part-time job. The way they prepare and

review their lessons are affected because they have insufficient time. Also, they don’t have

the energy to study hard. Hence, they usually do their studies carelessly and their grades

may be dissatisfying as well (Cheng, 2010). According to Ocadiz (2017), accepting jobs

provides students with a break from their studies which they can revert to their books

with clearer minds. Working students can gain by relating their studies to their jobs, which

enable them to manage their time between their class schedules, leisure time and

working hour.

There are many reasons for the increase in student employment. One of the

reasons why more students are working while attending school is because they want to

earn money to cover for their basic essentials or related expenses (Callender, 2008). High school
students get work also to earn money to prepare for the tertiary level (Selingo,

2015). A third reason is the desire for independence, in a way that they provide their own

needs with self-reliance. Another reason for students to accept jobs is for them to gain

experience that could help them in the future (Nolan & Hagen, 1989).

Knowing the importance of time management is a skill that every student should

not only observe, but also apply. A lot of students get frustrated and complain about

running out of time when asked to do a certain task because they are not able to make it

before the deadline. Time management is extremely important, especially when it comes

to students because it will boost their grades and enhance their productivity (Laurie &

Hellsten, 2002).
Time really cannot be managed for a reason that it cannot be slowed down or

speed up or manufactured (Akomolafe, 2005). In contrast, Quek (2001) specified that

time can be managed by learning and developing time management skills.

Mercaulioglu (2010) said that the most significant challenge on the part of the

working students who are working in different jobs at different times and ages, and

studying at the same time, will be the misuse of their time.
