PART-TIME EMPLOYMENT AND ITS EFFECTS ON TIME MANAGEMENT

AND STUDY HABITS OF WORKING STUDENTS

CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

1.1 Introduction

Education is very important, but sometimes, financial expenses related to

education affect the family, especially the students. Due to the increasing price of tuition

fees, school fees, and other education finances, families tend to face financial crisis

particularly on managing the budget of the family. These include the budget for food,

electricity bill and other bills. Families with an insufficient income are not capable of

affording those bills wherein their children are affected. Students are forced to find and

do part-time jobs.

Trying to do jobs and schooling simultaneously can become overwhelming and

may threaten the students’ schedule. Building a schedule that can help keep working

students on track can be very important (Cazares, 2013). According to Anderson (2013),

to successfully hold down a job while in high school, students must have a good time

management skill and organization. Working allows them to practice multitasking, work

on a team, build communication skills, learn interview etiquette and prioritize tasks.

In School, some students are facing problems with

regards to their time management due to accepting jobs and studying at the same time.

In this study, the plight of working students was looked into. Working students are those who work for a
part time job and get paid, while still in high school or college. These

working students are struggling in school, work, and other responsibilities resulting for

them to have tough time. Students, specifically the working ones, have many demands

on their time that is why it is important for them to learn time management strategies in

order to succeed in both their work and studies.

Due to the struggles faced by the working students in

School regarding their time, the researchers conducted a study about this matter. In this

study, the effects of part-time employment were presented. The researchers looked for

the advantages and disadvantages of being a working student, and the positive and

negative effects of it on their time management and study habits.
