CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

This chapter includes the introduction, statement of the problem, hypothesis, scope and
limitation, conceptual framework, significance of the study and the definition of terms used.

Introduction
Even if they and their parents are struggling with finances, teenagers nowadays are determined to
continue and complete their education. Students desire to pursue their college degrees, but the
cost of tuition might be prohibitive. Every college student worries about paying for their
education. The only way to cover all the expenses of going to college, given the rising cost of
higher education, is to get a part-time job while you're a student. College students, in particular,
are ready to begin working and gain more independence. If you desire a high-quality education,
enrolling in college courses may be expensive. You may assume that, given the high cost of
attending college, students would receive an excellent education and be able to obtain a job after
college. Today's students, however, were exposed to a variety of difficult situations. That is why
it is great that college students are dedicated and hardworking.
Most students work part-time jobs to support their parents financially when times are tough.
While taking a part-time job while pursuing your dreams has its risks, there are also many
benefits.
According to Darlena Cunha (2018), working while in school has several advantages, including
financial gain, lessons in budgeting, time management, and especially the opportunity to gain
early work experience. Although it is commonly acknowledged that many students work part-
time jobs outside of school hours, little is known about the effects of this employment.
It shows that the main benefits of this are that students will grow more independent and mature
because they are now self-learning in their life, but there may also be some negative effects
because students may not give an appropriate balance between a part-time job and their academic
performance.
According to Marie Anderson (2013), the majority of college students are currently experiencing
a lack of time, dealing with stress, and as a result, their academic performance is being impacted
by all of the workloads that students are now dealing with. This shows that time is extremely
valuable for all college students who have a part-time job. Students in college should not waste
their time if they want to hold a job while they are enrolled in classes. Students need to be
proficient in time management and organizing abilities, as well as knowledge of how to use their
time properly.
On the other side, time management refers to how college students should use their time, which
includes accomplishing the correct tasks at the right times. This would give the students a better
understanding of what they have to do in terms of scheduling time to study and managing their
obligations to their families, jobs, and schools, which might lead to better student academic
performance and academic success for the chosen students.
Along these lines, full-time students who also worked a part-time job were more likely to
experience stress. Due to the numerous thoughts running through their minds, a part-time
employment might also have an adverse effect on a student's health. Because they frequently
spend their money on school-related activities rather than eating for themselves, several of them
struggle with weight loss.
According to Kleinschmidt (2013), the stress of studying in a short amount of time can cause
panic, particularly if a term paper is due tomorrow and the student is exhausted from work and
doesn't get enough sleep after a long shift. This will eventually cause college students to lose
control and become frightened. This demonstrates that students believe they should meet the
deadline in accordance with their jobs and academic obligations. Because of their busy schedules
and need to keep up for all the recruitments they have to do, working students are more likely to
experience stress the less sleep they get.
Only students who spend more time on academic-related tasks during their everyday activities
outside of class, such as reading books, finishing projects, researching, and creating reports, can
achieve better academic success. On the other side, working while in school may encourage
young people to work harder in class to reach a certain career goal.
This study makes a serious effort to assist the students in understanding the potential impacts of
working on their academic achievement. This research will give students more understanding
about them, working a part-time job, and potential implications of their choices, such as whether
it would improve their academic performance or hurt it.
Background of the Study

The most difficult part of being a working student is probably finding a balance between your
social life, family time, schoolwork, and work. Making sure you get at least one night off each
week and learning how to manage the pressure that comes with being a working undergrad will
significantly reduce your stress levels (Mitchell, 2016). Despite their financial difficulties,
Filipino students are still able to sustain themselves financially through working. Online jobs,
paid corporate internships, fast-food crew positions, and school jobs are the job alternatives for
Filipino working students, according to The Working Student (2016). Filipino students struggle
because they must maintain academic performance in order to avoid receiving a failing grade and
maintain the standards in their work in order to keep their jobs. According to the most recent data
from the Commission on Higher Education, almost 216,000 students in the Philippines are
currently balancing employment and study (CHED). A working student makes up around 8% of
all college students in the Philippines (ABS-CBN News, 2010). According to CHED (2010),
barely half of employed students complete college since many struggle with concentration,
others drop out due to bad health, and still others quit due to financial difficulties.
The Department of Education is particularly concerned about the low rates of academic success
in the Davao Region (DepEd). According to Ramento's (2011) study, the City of Davao students'
low educational achievements are the result of their low salaries, which force them to balance job
and school. Since they are spending more time working than studying as a result of their
financial difficulties, many students are performing poorly in school and receiving poor grades.
The research conducted by Williams (2014) revealed that the student labor is often required to
satisfy expenses or basic needs. both out of necessity and to support the students' long-term
goals. Such was backed up by the research conducted by Furr and Elling in 2002, where the
reason why the Due to financial difficulties, students often work part-time. In addition to these
motives, Working while enrolled in school had negative effects as well, according to the findings
of the Darolia (2014) study, which found that understudies take fewer due to work obligations,
qualities in school. The kids thus lost confidence to join, are discontinuing, and have begun to
obtain a secure employment. The U.S. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (2013),
discovered that 34.1% of high school students graduating between January and October 2013,
are currently employed.
The majority of studies on working students are carried out at academic institutions in
industrialized nations, however these studies lack information on how working students deal
with problems in their daily life. According to the research of Ruhm (1997), it is important to
comprehend the effects of working students on society because, as the rate of working students
reached an abnormal level, job-hiring began to demonstrate the unfavorable effects that were
attributed to it since it reduces academic performance and instructional fulfillment, especially
among young workers without school training. However, if employment at a young age turns out
to be advantageous for the economy.
The high percentage of working students may therefore contribute to profit discrepancies later in
life. The researchers must examine the gaps in the data because there are numerous potential
conclusions.
This study analyzes how students maximize and balance their time in working and in learning.
the researcher will be exploring the experiences of the working students to fully understand what
a working student is. The study's other objective is to look into students' employment-related
experiences and examine how it will relate to time management of students. Lastly, researchers
will observe how they handle and overcome such challenges in managing their time properly.
Then, after the stude, the team will offer solutions and suggest ideas that would assist the
working students.

Statement of the Problem

The study focused on the effects of the part-time job of the students to their academic
performance.

…Specifically, it aims to answer the following questions:

1.What are the pros and cons of being a working student?

2.How part time jobs can influence the time management of students?
3.Is there a part time job that affects time management of students?
