CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Working while going to school may be both fulfilling and exhausting, and it

is mostly motivated by the need to stick to a budget in order to support long-term

goals and pay unforeseen daily expenses. Every student strives for academic

achievement since it signals a bright future for them. Academic performance is a

complicated process that is affected by a number of variables, including study

habits. A person's capacity to acquire and remember information may be

enhanced by appropriate study habits. Students with good study habits could

lead their tasks to be successful.

With the help of this study, we may concentrate on matters of greater

importance and gain a better understanding of the struggles that working

students face on a daily basis. In order for us to recognize and comprehend each

other's needs, as well as to teach us to share and care for others, this may

encourage and motivate others to continue struggling in their daily lives as

students and as individuals.

There are several benefits of being a working student, in terms of money,

lessons on budgeting, time management, and especially for early working

experience. It is widely recognized that many students are employed part-time

out of school hours, but little is known about the consequences of such

employment. It shows that the major positive effect of this is that, the students
3

will be independent and they become mature as they are now self-learning in

their lives but somehow can be a negative effect because the students might not

give proper concentration between a part-time job and academic performance,

Cunha (2018). "To be able to appreciate the value of things, we should first

determine their struggles", that means that by knowing the struggles of working

students they will be so much appreciated by the people. By knowing the

struggles of working students, people will also be motivated to work hard.

Poverty is not a valid reason not to work hard. Poverty is not a hindrance to

success. Additional responsibilities related to personal matters and family duties

might add up to stress and mental health issues (Matheuws, 2018).

Statement of the Problem

The study aims to determine the study habits towards the academic

performance among working students in Cronasia Foundation College in General

Santos City.

Specifically, it seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What is the extent of study habits among the working students in Cronasia

Foundation College in terms of:

1.1 Time management;

1.2 Class attendance;

1.3 Participation; and

1.4 Exam preparation?

4

2. What are the factors that affects the study habit of working students in

Cronasia Foundation College relative to the following aspects:

2.1 Home;

2.2 School; and

2.3 Teacher?

3. What is the extent of academic performance among the working students

in Cronasia Foundation College?

4. Is there a significant relationship between the extent of study habits and

the factors that affects the respondents?

Significance of the Study

This study is significant to the following beneficiaries:

The School Administration. This study would help them to identify working

students to be prioritized when it comes to scholarship opportunities in this

institution. They will be also guided for future modification for future purposes.

The Teachers. The study might enable them to determine which of their students

are working and to modify their class schedules accordingly.

The Parents. The study may help them to encourage their children despite the

situation they are in and to understand the needs of their children.

The Working Students. The study may help them to gain more information

about balancing their time when it comes to studying and working.

5

The Researchers. This study would help the researcher to determine the study

habits towards the academic performance among working students.

The Future Researchers. The study may help them as their basis for their future

research or if they decide to proceed to another related research.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

This research focuses only on determining the study habits towards the

academic performance among the working students in Cronasia Foundation

College, Inc.

The researchers used a purposive sampling method for 100 working

students currently enrolled in Cronasia Foundation College, Inc. Academic Year

2022-2023.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

In order to provide clarification and support for the study's chosen

variables or components, this part explains the literature review and studies the

researcher conducted as well as the theories of well-known educators. This study

is conceptualized using the following references.

Related Literature

Study habits are the basis of a learner's academic success. It also has a

huge impact on education, especially by serving as a practical method to

evaluate students' learning progress (Tus, 2020).

Meanwhile, ineffective study techniques make it more probable that study

activity will be viewed as challenging and unpleasant, which will likely lead to

procrastination. Improved study techniques and routines may be recommended

as a cure. Good study habits and techniques may not be enough to solve issues

on their own (Svartdal, 2021).

The secret to becoming a successful student is learning how to study

more effectively. When given the chance and the time and attention to devote to

learning, students have the predisposition to learn in an organized and effective

manner. If students have organized study habits, they can work more

productively and efficiently in their academic endeavors while also feeling less

stressed (Daquioag, 2019). In addition, students should be provided with

7

specialized training to assist them to develop or adjust their study habits in order

to improve their academic performance Jafari (2019).

Barcenas (2022) concluded that studying behaviors including

concentrating on the teacher while discussing, memorizing, and reviewing

lectures in advance were found to be important for going to class. It was advised

that in order to increase academic performance, the school, teachers, and

students should offer a comfortable class schedule, enhance reading

comprehension, and adopt strategic note-taking as an efficient study habit.

Similarly to the study of Rathi (2022), the usage and practice of efficient

study techniques can aid in the acquisition, integration, and organization of

information. The development of good and beneficial study habits will also help

students build life skills.

Time management, workload, and showed stress are significantly and

favourably associated with student performance. In essence, the researcher

advises that in order to achieve higher levels of academic achievement, training

and seminars should be held for students to assist them to understand how to

allocate the proper time for studying subjects Sallehuddin (2019). Students who

work while studying in tertiary education may benefit from expanding their

portfolio of employability abilities, such as teamwork, time management,

customer service, and interpersonal communication Salamonson (2020).

Acaso (2019) stated that working while you study means taking up part-

time work to boost your income. It significantly affects how well students succeed
8

academically. This situation could have both favorable and unfavourable

outcomes. Students pick up how to balance their time between work and school

and academic success may help students receive high grades as compensation

for their efforts.

Antipolo (2021) stated that to perform better at the job and at school,

every working student should look into their time management. The results of his

study showed that males who are working students manage their time in a little

more stressful manner than women who are working students and that no male

working students ever claim to have organized time management, but some of

their female counterparts have made this claim. His study concludes by stating

that time management is different for men and women.

A research conducted by Al Azis (2021), due to the experience they

gained from working part-time while attending school, part-time workers can

nevertheless maintain a respectable grade point average (GPA) or even

outperform regular academic students in terms of academic accomplishment.

Therefore, higher students can work part-time jobs if they pay attention to time

management, which is crucial, and figure out a minimum amount of time to work

while still accomplishing their goals.

On the other hand, Porbile (2019) conclude that the rising cost of

education and the need to assist their parents are two reasons why students

must work while enrolled in classes. Since students struggle with time

management, this also has an impact on their academic achievement.

9

Researchers discovered that working students' experiences at school are not

simple. To survive and support their family, they must be resilient, capable of

supporting themselves, and responsible

Similarly to Henry Khiat (2019), whether you are a student or anyone else,

time management is fundamental to all of us. Managing time can affect the

students in any aspect. There are people who are excellent at managing their

time and there are also people who cannot manage their time. At the same time,

Johanna (2022) self-regulated learning in working college students is significantly

influenced by time management and learning motivation. The findings

demonstrated that self-regulated learning, which is contributed to by 42% of

students, is influenced by time management and learning motivation.

Class attendance is important which is always emphasized by

academics. Only in the classroom can a student hear the teacher's lessons, take

part in class debates, and profit from the teacher and student's impulsive

interactions Ocumen (2020).

Nieuwoudt (2020), states that giving students a range of options for online

participation and interaction as well as synchronous or asynchronous class

attendance may boost their chances of academic success. Additionally, parental

involvement in education was judged crucial for supporting and keeping track of

children's attendance and academic success Cepada (2020).

Dey (2018) concludes that her findings simply that showing up for class

has a favorable and significant impact on exam performance. Attendance

10

treatment effects were considerable, but not for performance Ansong (2019).

Attendance is determined by several aspects of self-regulated learning, with very

confident students being the least likely to attend, and that attendance at in-class

sessions is no longer an accurate indicator of performance Kauffman (2018).

Fadelelmoula (2018) concludes that both overall attendance and student

compliance with rules are very high. Students' academic achievement improved

when they attended class. This shows that attending lectures is essential for

learning, but a larger study is needed to account for other aspects.

Meanwhile, Zhang (2020) states that the primary goals of the college

students' reported employment during their studies were financial stability or the

acquisition of necessary skills for long-term work in their fields of study. Only one

study came to the conclusion that there was better than negative effects of

employment on academic achievement, whereas more than half of studies

revealed the opposite.

Amor (2020) says that working students typically experience scheduling

issues because their work and school schedules do not align. Additionally, due to

problems in passing their minor and major subjects brought on by stress at work,

working students struggled academically. The early submission of projects and

requirements can help to mitigate this issue, Bristol (2019).

Garcia (2019) said that the study habits were excellent, as evidenced by

their performance on examinations and quizzes, participation in class activities

and discussions, and prompt submission of any missed academic requirements.

11

Regarding self-discipline, they firmly agreed that participating in school sports

helps them improve their time management abilities. They also strongly agreed

that this helps them prepare thoroughly, exercise discipline, and maintain their

attention on the task at hand. Last but not least, it was shown that their academic

standing and involvement in school sports had a strong correlation. This

indicates that the respondent's involvement in school athletics is inversely

correlated with academic performance.

Coral (2020) stated that being a working student is exceedingly difficult

since they must offer both their full attention and all of their strength to their jobs.

Students who work to support their studies while earning a living now have a

demanding schedule. Working students have swiftly adjusted to meet the

difficulties and demands of the new regular education. However, it is important to

provide them with assistance and safeguards so that their studies and

employment are not jeopardized, Mutya (2022).

Lastly, in the study conducted by Sinha (2020), effective teaching is

essential for effective learning, but students also play a role. The capacity to

manage one’s time, reading habits, learning strategies, writing abilities, learning

environment, exam preparation, and other factors all play a role in one’s ability to

do well.

Related Studies

Regardless of employment situation, student age is the primary predictor

of higher grades. The impact of students' perceptions of their own work on their
12

academic success is therefore crucial. A pessimistic student who thinks working

on studying has a negative effect needs a balanced load of work and classwork.

However, a student's academic standing matters to them. Positive working

attitudes among senior students are more likely to be supported by strong

academic performance. While working a job related to their major can be

advantageous to learners and in other academic standings. Otherwise, a

considerable amount of work is still advised (Zhang, 2019).

Lessky (2021) findings revealed working while studying can benefit

students, e.g. in terms of employability, but research clearly shows that it can

have a negative impact on academic success when students work excessively.

This article addressed this complex phenomenon by exploring socio-economic

factors and fields of study that influence students’ decision to enter time-

consuming term-time employment.

In addition to the discussion about the study of Tus (2020). The results

showed that the study habits of the students are at a relatively average level.

Additionally, enhancing students' study habits are relevant, especially in note-

taking, reading ability, and health, thus improving their academic performance.

Thus, the academic performance level shows that the mean score of the

respondents' academic performance was satisfactory. No student was recorded

who did not meet the school's expectations, which means that the respondents

performed well enough inside the classroom. Also, there is no significant

relationship between study habits and the student’s academic performance,

indicating that the null hypothesis is not rejected. Therefore, the researchers
13

recommend that the school personnel create programs that will enhance the

learners' study habits to improve their performance in the class. Thus, teachers

should focus on things that always improve students' achievement in the school

specifically activities that will keep them actively engaged inside the classroom.

The findings indicated that the students' study practices are generally on

par. Additionally, improving students' study habits is important for their academic

achievement, particularly in note-taking, reading proficiency, and health. The

level of academic performance thus demonstrates that the average academic

performance of the respondents was satisfactory. No student was noted who did

not fulfill the standards set by the school, indicating that the responders

completed their jobs satisfactorily in the classroom. The null hypothesis is not

rejected since there is no significant correlation between the student’s academic

achievement and their study habits. The researchers advise school staff to

develop programs that would improve students' study habits in order to boost

their performance in class. Thus, educators should pay attention.

Theoretical Framework

This study is anchored by Becker (1964) stated about the Human Capital

Theory ,student employment can be a complement to education due to the

additional skills and knowledge obtained while working. There are several

reasons why student work may lead to such an increase in human capital. First,

student employment enables the acquisition of new general and transferable

14

skills such as work values, communication skills, and a sense of time

management (Buscha, Maurel, Page, & Speckesser, 2012; Rothstein, 2007; Staff

& Mortimer, 2007). Second, combining study and work may offer students the

opportunity to apply in practice what they have learned in school (Geel & Backes-

Gellner, 2012; Hotz et al., 2002). Third, student employment may increase future-

orientedness and thereby motivate students to work harder in school in order to

achieve a certain career goal (Oettinger, 1999; Rothstein, 2007).

Nowadays, the majority of our young people struggle as working students.

The focused of this study are the working students in Cronasia Foundations

College, Inc. In terms of time management, study habits, and family

relationships, they say that working while studying has an impact. Furthermore,

they agree that maintaining a relationship with their families while working and

attending school was a considerable challenging.

This research also examines the impact of these difficulties on the

academic performance of working students, particularly with regard to written

exams, performance tests, and major exams.

Regarding the written exam, respondents agree that their work has an

impact on their scores and that occasionally they even miss them. In the

performance test, respondents agree that they are unable to execute well on

their tasks and occasionally arrive late owing to their exhausting work. About the

big exam, the responders sometimes find it difficult to react, and often they even

forget to take it. Working while studying has a negative impact on students' time
15

management, study habits, and family relationships. Due to the difficulties faced

by working students, performance tests, written examinations, and major exams

are classified as low.

16

Conceptual Framework
