NMIMS VS NEW IIMs VS SIBM

NMIMS (Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies) and SIBM (Symbiosis Institute of
Business Management) are the two institutes which are often compared with the newer IIMs,
which are included in the CAP (this is different from Govt/ Maharashtra CAP) that includes
GD, PI and WAT. Is brand ‘IIM’ better as compared these two reputed B – schools? Let’s
understand certain factors at NMIMS – vs – new IIMs – vs – SIBM.

Various factors need to be considered while evaluating a B – School. Placements are given
the first priority by many students while choosing where to go. Though an important
parameter, it is definitely not a comprehensive one. Amidst reports of B – Schools
exaggerating their placement claims, it is not advisable to not consider other factors. Since
you’ll be investing the next two years of your life, personal parameters also play a role in
deciding which institute should be chosen. It requires a huge investment of time, money and
energy, so it is crucial to ensure your choice of programme and business school meets your
needs.
The broad parameters which should be looked at are:

 Location (sometimes personal)

 Fees (personal)
 Placements (companies, packages)
 Specialisation (very personal)
 Student and alumni network
 Other factors like batch strength, internships, etc.

HERE IS A COMPARISON:

LOCATION: NMIMS might have a slight edge here, in terms of placements, especially for
finance.

BATCH STRENGTH: SIBM notches this one over NMIMS here as the batch size of
NMIMS is around 500 students, while that of SIBM remains around 180. Batch size has a
huge role to play when it comes to placements.

COURSE FEE: NMIMS course fee is Rs. 17.5 L (excluding hostel) and SIBM’s is Rs. 20 L
(including hostel). The cost of living in Mumbai will bring the total cost to about the same
level.

Comparing the three institutes, IIMs have gained their footing even though they are new in
the market right now, thanks to the IIM name. Alumni also play a major role. The students
that have secured placements in good companies may encourage their recruitment mangers to
continue to recruit from the new IIMs they came from, by performing well and proving the
merit of the institute.

Since the new IIMs are mentored by old ones, classroom learning experience is matched with
the mentor IIM. For most of the new IIMs, their own campus is under construction and it
won’t be long before they shift to their permanent campuses. There is the assurance of best
faculty since they are loaned to them by their mentor IIMs.
Students in the newer IIMs can also register for any elective offered owing to the small batch
size while the same elective may have restricted number of sections taught in the mentor
IIMs. In the long run, brand IIM will take these institutes to heights.

SPECIALISATION:
If you plan to specialize in Finance, IIM Ranchi and NMIMS should be preferred over the
other institutes. This is because IIM Ranchi is being mentored by IIM Calcutta, one of the
best campuses for finance in India. Since NMIMS is located in the finance capital of India,
the kinds of companies coming for placements and the packages is going to be better.
Location has a huge impact on the placements.

Those planning to specialize in Marketing, SIBM and IIM Udaipur are clear winners. About
30% of the offers made were in the marketing role in SIBM in final placements of 2017. It is
very well known and time and again proved that marketing role is a major contributor in the
placements in SIBM.

For Human Resources specialistion, SIBM and IIM Ranchi should be preferred. IIM Ranchi
is emerging as the fastest growing new IIM. SIBM has proved its worth in the past and
continues to do so.

For Operations role, IIM Ranchi and IIM Raipur should be chosen.

Considering all the factors mentioned above, the final choice should be made on the basis of
desired specialization. If one is very sure of his/ her specialisation, pursuing the desired
degree from an esteemed institute is a big step in the right direction.
