This install guide is a companion to the Advanced Robotics training. Some information described here
is specific to the needs of this training and the related (example) training environment. More general
information may be obtained by contacting GTAC (Siemens Global Technical Assistance Center).
For example, in the (example) training environment:
• You have access to the GTAC website.
• The robot controller custom files are located in a sub folder of the N:\sysroot\OLP_config_files
folder. The content of this folder comes from this folder of the training data:
.\sysroot\Libraries\Sample rrs.xml
• The RRS clients (for RRS-based controllers) are installed in a sub folder of the
C:\Tecnomatix\rrs_bin folder. You create this folder, which is initially empty.
For the ABB RCS, go to the GTAC website and download the required
zip files
Step 1: Browse to https://download.industrysoftware.automation.siemens.com.
Step 4: Get the latest versions of the server, client, and common files. For
example: rcsabb_rw4_0.126.s4cplus.10_08_2010.server.PC.zip,
rcsabb_rw4_0.126.s4cplus.28_11_2008.client_PC.zip,
rcsabb_rw4_0.common.16_11_2007.server.PC.zip, and
rcsabb_rw4_0x_rw5.X.TuneAddOn.16_05_2008.client.PC.zip.
For the IRC5 RCS, go to the GTAC website and download the required
server, client, and common zip files
Step 1: Browse to https://download.industrysoftware.automation.siemens.com.
Step 4: Get the latest versions of the server, client, and common files.
For example: rcsabb_rw5.61.01.irc5.10_08_2010.server.PC.zip,
rcsabb_rw5.61.01.irc5.17_12_2008.client.PC.zip,
rcsabb_rw5_0.common.22_07_2010.server.PC.zip, and
rcsabb_rw4_0x_rw5.X.TuneAddOn.16_05_2008.client.PC.zip.
The version of the RCS server and client must match. For example rw5.61.01.
At your site follow the install guide and user guide to install, and configure the RCS.
In general, the ABB RCS client install goes in the C:\Tecnomatix\rrs_bin folder and
the ABB RCS server and license server are installed in a different folder (and computer)
according to the instructions. The information provided here describes how the RCS
was setup for this class.
The ABB RCS has these components: License server, RCS server, and RCS client.
At your site, you must decide where to install them, since each could be on the same
computer or on different computers. In class, the RCS license server is installed in a
central location and the RCS server and client are installed on each student’s computer.
e. Enter the path to the ABB RCS license file and save the file.
f. If a port is not specified in the license file, the default is 27000. Instead, add a port
number to the license file such as 27001.
d. Replace @sample_host with the port number of license server name, such as
27001@myserver and save the file.
f. Replace @sample_host with the port number of license server name, such as
27001@myserver and save the file.
g. For ABB, the RCS could have the license server installed on a different
computer than the RCS server or client. You should add a registry
entry to point to the license server: In the registry editor, browse to
HKEY_LOCAL_Machine\Software\wow6432node\Flexlm License Manager and
enter RCSABLMD_LICENSE_FILE = 27001@myLicenseServer.
e. Replace the IP address with the name of the RCS server, such as localhost.
j. Replace the IP address with the name of the RCS server, such as localhost.
k. For ABB, the RCS could have the license server installed on a different
computer than the RCS server or client. You should add a registry
entry to point to the license server: In the registry editor, browse to
When using the RCS in Process Simulate, the FlexLM license server
(rcsabb_lmgrd_sample_start.bat) must be started on the license server and the
rcsabb_rcsserv_start.bat must be started on the ABB RCS server.
Step 4: Optionally, download the latest version of the user manual. For example:
Process_Simulate_ABB_ RAPID _user_manual.pdf.
Downloading the user manual is optional, since it is placed into the
<ControllerInstallation>\Doc folder as part of the controller installation.
Finish up
Step 1: Run the setup to install it.
Step 2: Verify you have the Siemens license for it: TN70110 (ABB Rapid OLP).
This license controls the ABB and ABB Volvo robot controllers.
Step 3: Look at the s4cplus.cfg text file to see proper spelling of the MACHINE_DATA_NAME
for your robot.
During robot controller setup,MACHINE_DATA_NAME values from this file are
automatically populated in the Manipulator Type box list of values shown in Process
Simulate.
Step 6: Look at the irc5.cfg text file to see proper spelling of the MACHINE_DATA_NAME
for your robot.
During robot controller setup,MACHINE_DATA_NAME values from this file are
automatically populated in the Manipulator Type box list of values shown in Process
Simulate.
Step 2: Edit the rrs.xml file using a text editor such as Notepad++ (not Notepad).
Step 3: View the information in this file as described in the beginning of this lesson.
Normally, your administrator enters the information in this file in a way that
matches your environment. However in the training course, you should have
write access to this file.
Step 4: Here is an example ABB section for the rrs.xml file. Make sure that your file contains
similar content which matches your environment:
