End-semester Examination (50 marks)

2. Consider a system initially in an arbitrary state which is expressed in the |l, mi basis
set. r

|Ψi = √ |1, −1i + |1, 0i + √ |1, 1i

(a) Find hψ| L̂+ |ψi
(b) If L̂z is measured what values will one obtain and with what probabilities?
(c) If after measuring L̂z we find lz = −~, calculate the uncertainties ∆Lx and
∆Ly and their product ∆Lx ∆Ly (5 marks)
3. Consider the Ŝy operator, given in the Ŝz basis [|1i and |0i]. Let |1iy and |0iy are
eigen vectors of Ŝy . Find out the transformation matrix, Û , that connects |1i and
|0i to |1iy and |0iy . (4 marks)

4. Spin − 21 particle is found to be in an arbitary state |αi = 15
4 [in the Ŝz basis].
Express |αi in the Ŝy basis and find out the probability of getting −2~ when Ŝy is
measured. (4 marks)
5. Consider an arbitrary state |αi for a spin-1/2 system rotated by an angle φ about
the Z-axis. Find out the states obtained by a rotation of φ = 2π and φ = 4π and
comment on the results obtained.
(2 marks)
6. Consider the state |j, mi which is an eigen state of J 2 and Jz . Show that uncertainity
product ∆Jx ∆Jy can be written in the form:
∆Jx ∆Jy = a f(j,m).
Determine the constant ‘a’ and the function f(j,m). (6 marks)

7. The Hamiltonian of a particle with S=3/2 is given by
α 2 2 2 β
Ĥ = (Ŝ + Ŝ − 2S ) − Ŝz
~2 x y z
~
. Here ‘α’ and ‘β ’ are constants.
(4 marks)
9. (a) Assume that the Hamiltonian is invariant under time reversal for a non-degenerate
system, What can you conclude about the nature of wavefunction (i.e. real or
complex)? Give justification.
(b) The wavefunction for a plane wave at t = 0 is given by a complex function
ei~p·~x/~ . Does it violate the time reversal invariance? Give justification.
(3 marks)
10. Using partial wave analysis, obtain the relation between the scattering amplitude
f (θ, k) and phase shift δl (k) (6 marks)
11. Consider an N-electron system Φ(...nk ...nl ...). Using the occupation number for-
malism, find out the the following:
† †
(a) {cl , ck }
†
(b) {cl , ck }
(Note: You must arrive at the conclusion by taking all possible combinations of dif-
ferent values of nk and nl and l and k )
