Exercise 04

1. In country X, two diseases (DA and DB) affect the statures of children seriously
when they are 10-year-old. It is known that the height of a normal 5-year-old child is
normally distributed with mean 90cm. The heights of a 5-year-old child having DA
and DB are normally distributed with means 70cm and 105cm, respectively. The
standard derivation is 10cm in all three cases. It is also known that 5% of children
has DA and 3% of children has DB. The government of country X measures the
heights of all 5-year-old children. If the height of a child is greater than 100cm or
smaller than 80cm, he/she will be classified as a patient. Assume that a child would
not be inflected by DA and DB at the same time.

(a) What is the probability that a normal child is classified as a patient?

(b) What is the probability that a child has DA is classified as a normal child?
(c) What is the probability that a child has DB is classified as a normal child?
(d) What is the probability that a randomly selected child is classified as a normal
child?
(e) A child is classified as normal, what is the probability that he actually has DA
or DB?

2. The probability density function of a continuous random variable X is

1

(x − 2) 2 ≤ x < 3,

 2

f (x) = 1
3 ≤ x < 4.5,
2

0 otherwise.

(a) Sketch a graph for the probability density function f (x).

(b) Check that f (x) satisfies the requirements as a probability density function.
(c) Find:
(i) P(2 ≤ X ≤ 2.5), (ii) P(3 ≤ X ≤ 4), (iii) P(2.5 ≤ X ≤ 4).
(d) Find the cumulative distribution function for X.
