CE6 – Mechanics of Deformable Bodies

FINAL EXAMINATION

General Directions:
1. Write your solution in a clean sheet of paper.
2. Give your complete solution on each problem.
3. Round off your final answer to the nearest two decimal places.
4. Encircle your final answer.
5. Scan your answers and compile it in a pdf file.
6. Submit this on or before April 20, 2022, 08:00pm.
7. Clue: For shear and bending moment diagram problems, let the general formula for area be
𝑏ℎ
equal to 𝑛+1 where b, is the base length, h is the magnitude, and n is the degree of curvature of

the line.

Problem 1. Draw the shear and bending moment diagram of the following structure below.
Determine the maximum shear and moment.

Problem 2. Draw the shear and bending moment diagram of the following structure below.
Determine the maximum shear and moment.
Problem 3. Three wheel loads roll as a unit across a 60-ft span. The loads are P1=3000 lb, P2 =
10,000 lbs, and P3 = 15,000 lbs. P1 and P2 is separated by 6ft, and P3 is 12 ft from P2. Determine
the maximum moment and maximum shear in the simply supported span.

Problem 4. An aluminum tube has an inside diameter of d1=50mm, G=27 GPa, and Torque of 4.0
kN-m. 50 MPa is its allowable shear stress and its allowable shear strain is 900 x10 -6. What is the
required outside diameter d2?

Problem 5. A solid cylindrical brass with diameter d = 1.25 in. is subjected to Torque T1, as shown
in figure (a) below. The allowable shear stress is 12 ksi. (a) What is the maximum possible value
of the Torque T1? (b) As shown in figure (b) if we will make a hole with diameter 0.625 in. and is
drilled through the bar longitudinally, what is the maximum value of Torque 2? (c) What is the
percent increase/decrease in torque and the percent increase/decrease in weight due to the
hole?
