EOP or English for Occupational Purposes, together with English for Academic
Purposes are subfields of English for Spceific purposes..

Unlike EAP which aims to help students towards membership of their chosen academic
community and provide language instruction for academic study in the university,
EOP aims to meet occupational English language needs of learners in their
occupational settings.

EOP comes into existence when a "one-sie-fits-all" General English instruction

fails to meet adult learners' specific language needs in the workplace. Thus, EOP
is tailored for those who are already employed, with an emphasis on the language
used in job performance. For instance, a doctor from India working at a U.S.
hospital should not only has to have a good medical skills but also has to know how
to deliver a diagnosis to an American English patient efficiently and
compassionately.

Significantly, EOP lesson design requires trainers and content-specific

professionals to be equally interested in learning about a discipline hat might not
be their forte and to be willing to educate each other about their professions.
