Activity Sheet for Assessment Task 1

1. Compare Teaching as a vocation/ mission/profession to something by completing this

statement: TEACHING IS LIKE….

Teaching is like gardening; the students are the seedlings; the classroom is the

garden and the teacher is the gardener. Just like a gardener, it’s his/her calling to plant

and take good care of the plants in order to bloom perfectly same goes for a teacher’s

calling to guide and help the students grow and succeed.

Each time a student steps into the garden, it is the responsibility and mission of

the teacher to arrange beneficial activities which enable the students to grow strong and

beautiful into their natural splendor.

Taking teaching as a profession means that a teacher is willing to go through a

long period of preparation and continual professional development just like in gardening.

It takes a lot of time, effort and improvement to be a good gardener. A gardener must

know everything from root to tips of his/her plant for him to be able to aid support in the

growing process.

The teacher should be patient with the seedlings because they are all individuals

who grow at their own rate and in their own way, regardless of how much water or

sunlight they receive; no two are the same. Some students mature early, while others

mature late; some demand special supervision, while others grow with a wild will of their

own. And, every now and then, one refuses to grow at all.

2. With the qualities of a professional in mind, write other Filipino traits that work against

the making of a true Filipino Professional. Propose some remedial measures.

Habits are difficult to break, and many people are unaware that they have them.

It is almost everywhere, even on social media sites or on national TV. The following are

some Filipino traits that work against the making of a true Filipino professional and

some ways on how to overcome these.

● FILIPINO TIME

Filipino time is now commonly associated with being late. For example, if

a program is set at 1pm, many will arrive way past at the said time, like 1:30pm

or 2:00pm. This attitude is not a good thing. Being professional, one must be

aware how time is so precious to someone. Instead of doing activities and being

productive, one must wait for the others to start the program. Time can be

wasted on waiting. There are ways on how to overcome this Filipino time, one is

to set your alarm earlier. Considering you have to prepare for breakfast or take a

bath and time to travel. Also, don’t accept too many invites. If your schedule is

tight and packed already, avoid accepting more. Keep a schedule calendar to

keep you on track.

● NINGAS COGON

It means a burning cogon grass, which burns brightly for a few seconds

after being lighted. This describes an individual’s trait that is excellent in starting

a new project or task, only to lose the excitement and stop working on it entirely

soon after. A professional must always show interest and enthusiasm all

throughout the project or task. To avoid being Ningas cogon, you must be aware

of the consequences of this mentality and should reflect on this. Avoid starting a

new project if you know you can’t finish them. Also think that whatever you finish

will reflect who you are and what you have achieved. Asking help from someone

also can make the work easier.

● PROCRASTINATION

Defined as the action of delaying or postponing something. It is when you

choose to do something else other than the task you know you should be

performing. Usually, one ignores the tedious but more important task, in favor of

one that is more exciting and easier. As a professional, you have more tasks to

do and must be finished as soon as possible. To stop procrastination, you should

identify the hardest task and important to the least ones. Keep a to-do list, and

prioritize it. If you know what to prioritize, then you should set the time that will be

spent on that so that you can do other things. You will develop very wise time

management skills by doing so.

● BAHALA NA HABIT

Come what may - we tend to leave the outcome to whatever that could

happen instead of doing something to make things happen. For example, instead

of studying for exams, some will spend more time chatting and leave the chance

of passing to luck. As a professional, there’s always ways on how to complete a

work even if it is complicated, it should still be handled because all tasks are

important. Sometimes, this might be helpful but always remember that this habit

can keep you from finding ways out of tough situations. Know that we can never

grow or learn if we don’t experience hardships.

● CRAB MENTALITY

There are Filipinos who tend to have this mentality especially when they

fear insecurity. It is an unhealthy competition - if you can’t win, no one will, then

the person will drag down others with them, discouraging them from taking great

opportunities or destroying and gossiping their image. A professional must have

a healthy relationship and at some point, might have competition but it is

important to strive hard without making others suffer. To avoid this mentality, you

should push, not pull. You don’t need to pull others down at your own benefit,

instead be a pusher, you can be the one who can lift them up. Consciously

practice gratitude and avoid comparing yourself to others. This might only lead to

being jealous, and you should not have that, because it can ruin you. Be mindful

that you can use their success as an inspiration to become a better version of

yourself.

● HYPOCRISY (being a double-faced person)

As citizens of a country that claims to promote morality, most of us strive

to meet the standards set by traditional society. However, because no one is

perfect, many were not actually able to achieve these standards. Being a double-

faced person is sometimes a way of hiding failures in following the norms. And

our opinions about things vary depending on the situation. As a professional we

are highly influenced by our surroundings, so to retain yourself you should ignore

and only act based on your own morals. Avoid condemning or criticizing others.

Try putting yourself in one’s shoes so that you can understand what they’re

experiencing.

3. Once more, read the letter to the teacher then state the mission of a professional

teacher.

Dear Teacher :

I am a survivor of war.

My eyes saw what no man should see

Gas chambers built by learned engineers; Children poisoned by educated physicians;

Infants killed by trained nurses; woman and babies shot and burned by high school and

college graduates.

So I AM SUSPICIOUS OF EDUCATION

My request is : Help your students BECOME HUMAN.

Your efforts MUST NEVER PRODUCE LEARNED MONSTERS and skilled

Psychopaths

Reading, writing and arithmetic are important ONLY if they serve to make our children

MORE HUMAN

The letter to the Teacher was written by a Holocaust survivor. The Holocaust is

the term that refers to the killing of around six million Jews by the Nazi regime and their

collaborators during the Second World War. The survivors couldn’t understand how

seemingly the civilized and highly educated people such as engineers, doctors and

nurses willingly engaged in the operation of concentration camps.

The mission of a teacher is to teach. To teach is to influence every child

entrusted in your care to become better and happier because life becomes more

meaningful. To teach is to help the child become more human. In school, we attempt to

build well-formed consciences and promote values such as justice, mercy and

compassion, in addition to passing on knowledge and skills. We hoped that goodness in

character is something that can be caught as well as taught because it is an essential

component of a complete education. History reminds us that our world requires well-

educated people of principle and character who are willing to stand up to evil. Teachers

have a responsibility to help each student to become each other's “salt and light” to the

world.
