TOPIC PRESENTATION

Topic No. 2

I. General Subject Area: Polishing Device

II. Specific Topic: Development of Plastic Mold Polisher

III. Definition of the Topic

A. Importance and Significance (Rationale)

UN report stated that the Philippines has only 10 hospital beds for every 10,000
inhabitants. Myanmar and Cambodia, respectively, have nine and eight beds per 10,000 people.
According to the Department of Health, coronavirus bed occupancy is presently at 52.3 percent,
while non-coronavirus bed occupancy is at 50 percent, both of which are in the "danger zone."
This means that 8,577 of the 16,388-hospital allocated for COVID-19 cases in the Philippines are
already being used. (Philstar, 2020) [1].

The specialists speculated that if the country reaches its peak, meaning a COVID-positive
individual might infect two others, the Philippines may not have enough hospital beds for
severely ill patients, particularly in Rizal, Cavite, and Bulacan provinces. (CNN, 2020) [2].

In a simpler word, a wheelchair can be depicted as a structure consists of wheels

connected to a chair. It is a device that can capacitate a disabled person to live with a normal life.
For many years, wheelchairs have developed quickly from manual wheelchairs into powered
one. (Bobde et al., 2017) [3].
This study will utilize alloy steel and cushion foam into a wheeled mobility device to lessen
the insufficient medical bed in health facilities.

B. Manageability (Scope and Limitation)

The study will focus on the design and development of a polishing device to easily polish
the narrow parts of plastic mold.

The polisher will be made of a bamboo stick in which a piece of rubber will be attached to
the tip. The tip of the bamboo stick will be cut by 45 degree and will serve as the body of the
device.

However, the study will be limited to the plastic mold only. Plus, the study will be restricted
to producing different sizes.

C. Availability of Resources (Sources of Information)

The information needed in developing the project will come from various internet
articles, reference books, journals, patent databases, and other sources.

IV. Expected Output

General Objective:

The general objective of the study is to develop a polishing device that is made up of
Bamboo stick. This mold polisher can be used as a tool to polish those narrow areas of a plastic
mold.

Specific Objectives:

1. Design a plastic mold polisher with the following characteristics:

a) bamboo stick as body; and

b) rubber as sticky element

2. Develop the prototype using locally available materials.

3. Test the prototype in terms of the amount of time in polishing the plastic mold.

4. Evaluate the performance of the prototype in terms of workability, durability, functionality,

safety, aesthetics, and economy.

ABSTRACT:

Prior Art A: RS 140 to Solve Air Pollution: TN Man’s Coconut Coir Filter Cuts Vehicle
Emissions by 40%

It is a filter that can be attached to the exhaust pipe of vehicles. This device comprises
of natural components inside that filter harmful emissions like Carbon Monoxide. The body
of the cylindrical filter is made from steel, and there are different, air-purifying layers inside
—a wire mesh followed by the activated charcoal and then coconut choir. Once the vehicular
emissions pass through the filter, the filtered air is let out through the tiny pores which form
the base of the filter. Figure 1 shows the preparation of filter for car exhaust pipe.

Prior Art B: Micro-Structured Coconut Spathe Fibers as Biofilter Media for Air
Pollution Control

This study explored the potential of coconut spathe fibers as air filter media to reduce
pollution level. Coconut spathe fibers (CSF) were cleaned and cut to 7cm by 7cm of thickness
0.5cm. Air filters were made up of the coconut pouch sandwiched between two metal plates.
Metal plates were ridden with evenly distributed 1cm diameter holes and 1cm apart. Filters
were constructed in triplicates and tested against air pollution. Figure 2 shows the coconut
tree sample with spathe fibers while Figure 3 shows the improvised filter media.

Prior Art C: Coconut Shells as Filling Material for Anerobic Filters

An alternative to traditional sanitation services includes an anaerobic filter, but the

high cost of appropriate filling material can be an obstacle to its wide-spread implementation.
To decrease this construction cost, the objective of this work was to study the use of coconut
shells as filling material for anaerobic filters. In addition, the husks were found to retain their
tensile strength following use in the reactors. Coconut husks have more empty bed volume
than other low-cost materials, such as crushed stone, nearing properties of traditional
materials. Figure 4 shows the of the up flow anaerobic filter.
