Ages 6-12 Years Old

“School Age”

Growth & Development Milestones:
Growth-
Weight- gains approx 5 lbs/yr Height- Increases 1-2 in/yr
Bones grow faster than muscles & ligaments (may experience growing pains)
Development-
Increased stamina & overall energy
Able to print words legibly
Uses utensils well
Can ride a bicycle & throw a ball overhand
Types of Play
Children of this age group developed all types of play shown in this
picture, with the main type of play they engage in being cooperative play.
Stages

Freud: Latency Stage (6 yrs old - 12 yrs old)

● The child places importance on privacy and understanding the body

Erikson: Industry vs Inferiority (6 - 12 yrs old)

● The child gains a sense of self-worth from involvement in activities

Piaget: Concrete Operational (7 - 11 yrs old)

● The child is capable of mature thought when allowed to manipulate and


see objects

Toy 1
UNO: (Recommended for ages 7+)

Cooperative play -

Allows child to play in a group with others

Helps them understands rules & rituals of game

Enjoys team play

Develops sense of accomplishment

When children engage in cooperative play, they


work with other children to accomplish a common
goal or purpose.

BALL: (Suitable for all school ages kids)

Cooperative play-

Allows child to play with others while playing on a team

Will create good hand/eye coordination

Playing outside may prevent obesity

(obesity is a serious health issue with school age children)

COLORING BOOK: (suitable for all school age kids)

Solitary Play:

Fosters independence & develops creativity


Develops powers of concentration, persistence, and completion

When children engage in solitary play, they are able to explore freely, master new
personal skills like new motor or cognitive skills, and prepare themselves to play with
others.

(Choking hazard on crayons, and markers (specifically marker caps))


Toy 4

PUZZLE: (Suitable for all school age kids)

Solitary Play or Cooperative Play -

Helps children develop persistence, or the ability to keep going in the face of
difficulty.

Develops fine motor and hand-eye coordination: Children refine their fine motor and
hand-eye coordination skills as they manipulate puzzle pieces to put the puzzle
together.

(Choking hazard on small puzzle pieces!)

BATTLESHIP: (Recommended for ages 7+)

Cooperative Play -
Allows the child to play against someone else
Teaches competitiveness and understanding of rules
Children work together to achieve a common goal (winning)
