Drama is a typical structure of literature. It is an enchanting; an exist routine that shows

the skill to illustrate and display the emotion from the audience and this emotion will make
the audience feels various types of feelings, from horror to fun, from hatred to love, and from
bad to good minus any extraordinary effect such as sound, lighting, and make up. To me,
drama tells a real story of a person, an event, and many more.

For the English Studies assignment, we were given the assignment of perform one of
the plays by the great poet which is William Shakespeare, Macbeth. My whole course group
was separated into teams of five or six and my team companion were Wan Abdul Qayyim
Wan Jaafar, Alis Hafizi Zunkipeli, Farah Hayana Shukri, Solehah Mohamad Rodze and
Atikah Zakaria. The assignment given specifically required us to present a modified version
of one of the scene in Macbeth, meaning that we did not have to stick to the exact language
used in the play without changing the plot and storyline radically.

All the way through this experience, I managed to gain a lot of knowledge on various
aspects of the staging of the drama. We also received a lot of help from our lectures since
they had the experience of evaluating a staging of Shakespeare’s work. Every Tuesday for
two weeks, we had drama workshop where this workshop was handled by the lectures from
Jabatan Pengajian Melayu and in that workshop, we were taught on how to bring out the
voice from the pit of the stomach rather than the throat. This is important because if we bring
out the voice from the throat, it will cause sore throat and thus we can’t speak very clear. We
also learnt that drama required us to maximize the use of facial expressions. Activities like
monologue stressed the importance of these characteristics. We were also taught on how to
play the drama by using the space that we have. This was where we need to plan on how to
maximize the usage of the stage. We were given some tips on how to improvise our skills in
drama. Individually, I enjoyed lessons with the lectures because there are no other activities
that can increase our skills in dramatizing a play. Besides, sometimes it got a little bit boring
practiced the same line with my group day after day.

From zero to have a lot of information on putting a play, I gained a large amount of
information that was significant and very useful. Actually, all these information helped me to
improve individually on the role I played. Although I had the experience on playing a drama
as I had been involve in drama since I was in secondary school, actually I still shy and
nervous when performing out my role, but with the encouragement and tips on how to
advance by the lecturers, I progressively managed to open up and grip the character that I
played which is as King Macbeth. I also learnt that discipline is a key value to possess
especially when it comes to punctuality and training the voice because without discipline, you
cannot get any knowledge as it is the most important part in any drama not only for me, but
anyone who involve in playing a drama.

While working in our group, every member contributed to the decision making process.
Right after the acceptance of this project, the entire member agreed that each one of us in
command of a characteristic of the drama. I volunteered to handle the music. Scriptwriting
went under Atikah. Farah volunteered for backdrops and Solehah for make-up. Qayyim
volunteered to handle the costume and Alis for the props for the group. We all agreed that
Qayyim would become the director as he had experience in handling a work.

We also thought it would be wise to meet up on a specific day of the week to read the
play together, understand it together and performing it out together rather than only reading it
by ourselves. This was agreed upon and we met every Sunday and Friday to discuss and
performing Macbeth.

I thought it would be convenient if we had a role to play so that the effort would be
divided evenly and would not be as such a bother to think about. Atikah gave the first draft of
the script to the rest of the group to go through and peer-edit. We were all thought to read the
play on our own but due to the difficulty of the language used from the Internet, I think our
group really have advantaged from the sessions twice a week where we can donated our ideas
and opinions. These meeting also helped us discuss what scenes would be suitable to choose
for our drama.

We were made to work in group for a reason. This complete experience actually taught
me on the importance of working together as one team rather than trying to handle each task
by person. For example, when there was a bit of problem regarding on the extra role in each
scene we had choose, we all came to an agreement to use our voice in the scene that we
played. For example, in act 2 scene 1, I will play as the voice of the dagger and the play was
done very well. As a person, I have become more tolerant. I also learnt how to receive
positive criticism on the way I performed my role so that I could improve my act. We were
fortunate to have our lecturers watching our performance, and they had a lot of positive
observations on how we could improve our play.

To sum up, this complete experience has been like a wheel. Sometimes it going up and
sometimes it going down on the other hand leave us overjoyed later. After going through so
much with my group mates, I really can’t visualize finishing this project with any other
individuals.
