This spring semester I chose to take ENC 2135 because it was my academic requirement

for general education and my major. I am double majoring in business management and

management informational systems. ENC 2135 is a first-year composition course at Florida State

University that dives deeper into the critical reading, writing, and thinking skills that surfaced in

the ENC 1101 class that needs to be taken beforehand. This course also focuses on

communication between peers using things such as drafts, collaboration assignments, peer

editing assignments and much more. The course goes through these things in order to build the

writing knowledge and experience of the student taking the class, as well as showing the student

how to present the information to others.

In order to effectively enforce the purpose of the course, there were weekly assignments

in the course. These assignments allowed for us to use the information that we learned in class

that week and apply it to a situation that was assigned to us. An example of this would be weekly

assignment 8, where students had to choose one of two articles to write about it. In this writing

we were supposed to identify the audience, the rhetorical appeals, and the genre, which are all

things that we learned that week in class. Weekly assignments were also used to help students

progress on our work and get feedback on it as we continue on. An example of this would be

weekly assignment 7. In this weekly assignment students were asked to create a draft for their P2

project. This draft was just so that students can brains storm a plan and outline for their paper,

allowing for the process to be easier when starting the paper. Students then received feedback

from the professor, allowing for us to fix any mistakes in the early stages of writing to create a

great paper.

ENC 2135 allowed for me to dive deeper into my major as well. I had to do more

research on my major during this course due to the fact that I needed to create papers outlining
an issue in my major’s field and I also had to use the writing style that is more commonly found

in my major. While doing this research I learned new information about my major and my

interest was so peaked in things concerning my major that I decided to pursue a double major in

the midst of the class. My original major was business management, but I decided to double

major in management informational systems because of how the information I learned transpired

in both fields.

This class taught me more in-depth things about writing, while also helping to prepare me

for writing in my intended field in the future. The course also taught me about issues in my

current field that I will have to deal with once I get there. I know the different variations of the

issue and different solutions thanks to this course. All in all, ENC 2135 was not just a class, but a

steppingstone that would reveal much need information, help me in school, and help me in life. I

want to take this time to thank my professor, Sierra Biggs, for all the help that she has given me

throughout the semester as well as the deep level of understanding she has had throughout this

semester.
