PRINCIPLE OF MOMENTS

AIM : To determine the weight of a given object.

APPARATUS : A uniform metre scale, a wooden wedge, a known weight (W1) and an unknown
weight (W2).

PROCEDURE :
1. Balance the given metre scale horizontally on the given wooden wedge. Note and record the balance
position, as the C.G. of the given scale. Weight of the scale acts at its C.G.
2. Suspend the known weight at 10 cm away from one end of the scale.
3. Suspend the unknown weight on the other side of the fulcrum and balance the scale.
4. Measure the distance x of the fulcrum from the known weight and the distance y of the fulcrum
from the unknown weight.
5. Repeat the experiment for four more values of x and obtain the corresponding value of y.

CONCLUSIONS :
1. Mean weight W2= ___________gm-wt .
