Problem 0: Time-space graphical example

Prof. Nikolas Geroliminis

Solution

Time-Space graph for this example:

𝑇𝐷 = Total Distance

𝑇𝐷 = 𝐷𝐴𝐵 − 𝐷𝐵𝐶 + 𝐷𝐶𝐷 = 20 𝑡1 − 20 𝑡2 + 20 𝑡1 = 40 𝑡1 − 20 𝑡2 (1)

𝑇𝑇 = Total Time

𝑇𝑇 = 𝑡𝐴𝐵 + 𝑡𝐵𝐶 + 𝑡𝐶𝐷 = 𝑡1 + 𝑡2 + 𝑡1 = 2𝑡1 + 𝑡2 (2)

Relation between 𝑡1 and 𝑡2:

𝐷𝐴𝐵 − 𝐷𝐵𝐶 = 𝐷𝐴𝐶 ⟺ 20𝑡1 − 20𝑡2 = 4 (𝑡1 + 𝑡2 ) ⟺ 𝑡1 = 1.5 𝑡2 (3)

𝑇𝐷 40 𝑡1 −20𝑡2 60 𝑡2 −20𝑡2 40
𝑉̅ = 𝑇𝑇
= 2𝑡1 +𝑡2
= 3 𝑡2 +𝑡2
= 4
= 𝟏𝟎 𝒌𝒎/𝒉

The red line on the graph represents the slope that we just found (the average speed).
