The Department of Education Region VI- Western
Visayas issued the Regional Memorandum No. 342, s.
2021, spearheads the implementation of Home
Gardening Program in response to the call of the
Sustainable Development Goals to alleviate hunger and
poverty and promote good health and well-being.
Rationale
Home Gardening is the cultivation of a small portion of
land and/or in a container around the household or
within walking distance from the family home for
security, convenience and special care. It is the small-
scale production system supplying agricultural food
items either not obtainable, affordable or readily
available through retail markets.
Home Garden can be described as a mixed cropping
system of vegetables, fruits, plantation crops, spices,
herbs ornamental, flowering and medicinal plant as well
as livestock that can serve as a supplementary source of
food and income. Home gardening requires low or no
capital input and simple technology.
The occurrence of the pandemic and economic crisis has
taught us lesson and drew out realizations as high
lightened the Regional Director Ramir B. Uytico that
“only those with food on the table can survive.” The
home-grown procedures ensure food security in
response to the Sustainable Development goals;
specifically, to alleviate hunger, poverty and promote
good health and well-being.
There has been a big demand for food as shown in the
growing numbers of food pantry initiated by individuals
or groups. The demand will be addressed if everyone
takes his/her part in growing health food for the family.
Hence, DepEd Region VI – Western Visayas take the
initiative in promoting Home Gardening among basic Example of Home Garden
year 2021-2022 by applying the theories and skills
learned in Edukasyong Pantahanan at Pangkabuhayan
(EPP)/ Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE) and
Technical and Vocational (TVL) classes. Further, this
program requires the participation and involvement of
all DepEd personnel in all levels of governance in
Western Visayas.
Benefits/Advantages of the Home Gardening Program
1. Sustainable food security, good nutrition, and
possible additional income and livelihood
opportunities for the families.
2. Provide avenue to promote well-being,
creativity/aesthetic expression and mental of
the implementers
3. Utilize ecologically-friendly approaches for food
production while conserving bio-diversity and
natural resources
4. Minimize monetary expenses for purchase of
key inputs like seeds, fertilizers and plant
protection chemical
