Synopsis
Bridge to Terabithia is a fiction and fantasy genre film released in 2007. This film is adapted from
the novel of the same name written by Katherine Paterson which was published in 1977. The
film, directed by Gabor Csupo, tells about the adventures and friendships between Jess Aarons
and AnnaSophia. . Jess Aarons (Josh Hutcherson) is a 12-year-old boy who has a talent for art.

In a small town called Lark Creek, Jess and her sister May Belle (Bailee Madison) grew up under
their father's harsh upbringing. This often made Jess feel a little depressed. Especially when he
realized that his parents paid more attention to May Belle. But Jess's sadness is slightly healed by
the presence of a new student at her school, Leslie Burke (Anna Sophia Robb).

On their way home from school, Leslie and Jess realized that they were neighbors. Their
friendship began to become close after Leslie complimented the sketch drawn by Jess. From
here, the two often spend their free time playing in the forest and along the small river there.

One day, Leslie and Jess find a tree house that they turn into an imaginary world called Terabithia.
At Terabithia, they create characters and adventure stories based on reflections in real life. For
example, the figure of an evil monster who is a representation of Janice (Lauren Clinton), a girl
who is known as a bully at school. Or squirrel-like creatures called Sqoagers, created by Leslie
and Jess based on the nature of Scott Hoager (Cameron Wakefield). Terabithia also becomes a
big part of Leslie and Jess's lives. In fact, now Janice is also playing with them. But in this fantasy
world too, Jess has to face a harsh reality about her friendship.
Reviews
Bridge to Terabithia is a fantasy genre film adapted from the novel of the same name written by
Katherine Paterson in 1977. Bridge to Terabithia tells the friendship of two teenagers named Jess
Aarons (played by Josh Hutcherson) and Leslie Burke (played by Anna Sophia). Jess Aarons,
played by Josh Hutcherson is a boy. He has four sisters and is the only son in his family.

Her father didn't like her hobby because drawing was considered a girl's hobby. So, Jess often
drew secretly in her room. Meanwhile Leslie Burke, played by Anna Sophia Robb, is a new
student in Jess's class with a tomboyish personality. At the beginning of the film, it is told that
Jess has no friends and is a victim of bullying at school. He trains hard to win the running
competition that will be held at his school. Unfortunately, he and the other participants, the
majority of whom were boys, were actually defeated by a female student, Leslie.

Investigate a calibaration, the student's family had moved across from Jess's house. Even though
at first Jess didn't want to be friends with Leslie, over time she started to open up her heart.
Bleslie, who knew Jess liked to draw, gave Jess full support to develop her hobby. Leslie even
gave Jess a box of expensive dye as a gift.

Jess is a child who has a hobby of drawing. His drawings are very good, and I think he is a
talented illustrator or artist in the future. Unfortunately, his father, who is a farmer, is very
conservative and does not support his son's brilliant talent. He was always told to do various jobs
on his family's farms and plantations because Jess was the only boy there, among the four sisters
in his family and was really brought up very hard by his father.

One day, a transfer student named Leslie Burke arrives in Jess's class. A few moments after Leslie
attended her new school, she immediately surprised all the boys in her class because she could
win a race that all boys participated in. Leslie did this in order to be friends with Jess, because
since the beginning of the story, Jess was a child who didn't have many friends at school and was
often the victim of bullying.

Not accepting being defeated by Leslie, Jess then refuses when invited to be friends with Leslie.
However, everything changed because Leslie was the only child in her school who supported her
hobby of drawing. Leslie even gave Jess some drawing tools as a gift. In fact, they became even
closer after learning that Leslie, who was a new student, was Jess's neighbor. Their new home
was right next to Jess's farm and estate.

After starting to befriend Leslie, Jess used to play in the woods near their house every day. To
reach the forest, they had to swing across a small river with a rope hanging from a big tree like
Tarzan.

Their days are filled with fantasy stories that Leslie's fantasies begin very high. Leslie spreads
Jess's imagination by inviting Jess to imagine that the entire forest is a magical land called
Terabithia. Instantly, this film immediately felt alive with various beautiful CGI which was
classified as very good in 2007. This film immediately changed with a beautiful atmosphere and
feel as depicted in various famous fantasy films such as Narnia, Harry Potter, and Lord of the
Rings, complete with various fantasy creatures as well as beautiful natural landscapes. Although,
all these things only happened in Jess and Leslie's heads.

One time, it was raining so hard when they were doing their usual fantasy game in the forest that
they were forced to end their game. They ran to their respective homes and briefly parted ways
at a crossroads and promised to meet at Terabithia the next day.

When she got home, Jess got a call from her school's art teacher, Ms. Edmund (Zooey
Deschanel), with the intention of taking him to a painting exhibition in the next town. Mrs.
Edmund took Jess to the painting exhibition so that Jess was inspired to concentrate her talent
like the artists in the painting exhibition. Since the beginning of the story, Jess really likes Ms.
Edmund because he is a beautiful teacher who is very attentive to his students, so he could not
refuse Ms. the Edmund. Even Jess chose not to take Leslie with her, even though she was her
only friend at school and a neighbor.

After returning from the painting exhibition, Jess's expression of happiness immediately faded
because her family was gathered in the living room. Jess's family thought that Jess had gone with
Leslie to the woods behind their house. Apparently, Leslie had gone to Terabithia anyway
without waiting for Jess and expecting Jess to follow her there. At that time, the rope used by
Jess and Leslie to get to Terabithia broke when Leslie used to swing so that Leslie drifted in the
river, and was found dead. Jess, who didn't believe her family's story, immediately ran out of the
house and saw that there were police officers and medics at Leslie's house.

While at the funeral home, Leslie's parents thanked Jess for being the only friend for Leslie who
was a new student. Apparently Leslie often told her parents about their fun in the forest. When
meeting Ms. Edmund at Leslie's house, Jess casually said to him, “Next time, we should take
Leslie out. He will love it.”

After Leslie's death, Jess was devastated because Jess often blamed herself for Leslie's death. At
school, he didn't even focus on music lessons taught by his favorite teacher, Ms. Edmund.
Whereas before, Jess was always happy with Ms. Edmund. The climax was when Jess dared to
retaliate for the actions of the child who often scolded her by hitting her during class. Luckily, the
teacher who was teaching at the time didn't punish her because she understood that Jess had
just lost her only friend. Then Jess built a bridge where she and Leslie used to cross the river so
that no one else had an accident like Leslie had. And the film closes with a scene where Jess
invites her youngest sister, Maybelle, to go to Terabithia with the bridge she just built.

In addition to presenting the story of the friendship of the two main characters, this film also
raises issues within the family. For example, Jess's hobby is considered a woman's hobby. This
film inserts a message that everyone has the right to be treated equally, regardless of their social
status, whatever their hobbies, and even how they look.
In this film, it is told that Jess's rejection of hobbies makes her not open to her family. He didn't
even mention that he was bullied at school because he didn't feel real family ties. Although the
theme of fantasy usually presents happiness, this film also teaches the meaning of maturity,
especially for young viewers.
This film introduces that the real world is not only about happiness, but also about rejection,
problems, disappointments, and even loss.
