You have already learned how to read words, phrases and sentences
with initial and final consonant blends as well as words with digraphs ch
and sh.
In this learning kit, you are going to learn how to spell one-to-two-
syllable words with initial and final consonant blends and digraphs. Do
not write anything on this SLK. Use your notebook or other sheet of
paper for your answers.
Good luck!

MELC: Spell one-to-two syllable words with initial and final

consonant blends (e.g. pl, tr) and consonant digraphs (ch and sh).

At the end of the lesson, you are expected to:

1. identify words with initial and final consonant
blends and consonant digraphs;
2. demonstrate honesty and patience in answering the activities
and assessments; and,
3. spell and write consonant blends and consonant digraphs
correctly.

1
You have learned words, phrases, sentences and
even short stories consisting of words with consonant
digraphs in your previous lessons. Recall what you have
studied by doing the following tasks below.

DIRECTIONS: Read the sentences below. Copy the words with digraphs or
consonant blends.

1. Carla spilled some milk in her dress.

2. She will ship a box of seashells abroad.

3. One child chose fried chicken.

4. Bits of cheese were left in her chin.
5. Bring some snacks to your visitor.

2
After knowing how to read words with consonant blends
and digraphs, it is important also to spell these words
correctly.

In this lesson you will be given exercises that will sharpen your
spelling ability. You should remember that poor spelling affects the
message that you want to convey in any written communication. So as
early as now you should not only be a good reader but also an accurate
speller. Reading and spelling abilities are some of the factors to become
skillful enough in the English language.

The picture shows “chips.” Do you hear the sound

at the beginning of the word “chip” - /ch/? This
digraph is made of the letters “c” and “h” but when
we see them together in a word, we won’t sound
them out as /k/ /h/. Instead, we will say them as a
special sound /ch/.

On the other hand, a consonant blend is

when two or more consonants are combined,
but each sound may be heard in the blend.  Can
you hear the consonant blend /pl/ in “plane”?
Blends can also occur at the end of words as in the word “last”.

This is a two-part example. In the first part, you will be

given a passage that you need to read. Take note of the words
3
with consonant blends and digraphs and write them correctly in
the space provided.
Directions:
A. Read the paragraph below. Copy the underlined words
with consonant blends and digraphs.

Colors of Light
Sir Isaac Newton, a great English physicist and mathematician, proved
that light is composed of several colors.
Do you know what a prism is? It is a carefully shaped and polished clear
glass with many faces. Ordinary light is called white light which is really
composed of different colors. When light passes through a prism, it is refracted
and separated into different colors – red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and
violet.
