The document discusses different modes of transportation including air, water, rail, pipeline and road. It provides ratings from 1-5 and reasons for different parameters like reach, availability, reliability, flexibility, fixed costs, variable costs, documentation convenience, suitability for products, travelling time and operational convenience for each mode. The group members for the operation management assignment are also listed.

Abhishek Sharma (DM21A03) Indrayudh Banerjee (DM21A__) Akancha Gupta (DM21B06) Kamakshi Nagaich (DM21A__) MODE : Air | RATING: 3 Parameters Ratings Reasons reach of air is quite good but when it comes to the 3 small towns or cities the contains might affect the Reach mode of transportations. It is good for big cities where airports are well-built but not those interiors where there is a lack of infrastructure. the availability of air is not there in every cities or AVAILABILITY 3 towns, where the infrastructure supports this mode of transport it is good there but again due to high cost many opt out from such services. RELIABILITY 1 reliability in transporting the product is high in this case with less number of damages and manhandling. flexibility through air is not up to the mark. When a flight is scheduled it follows certain coordinates to FLEXIBILITY TO 4 reach the destination it may happen that there might CHANGE THE ROUTE be trouble in the destination changing the route for the air mode of transport is not that fast. Even the landing is also a factor which may or may not be granted by the neighboring airport. FIXED COST (COST FOR CREATING THE MODE OF TRANSPORT OR REACHING THE 5 the cost in the air mode of transport is very high in PLACE WHERETHE this case. MODE OF TRANSPORT IS AVAILABLE.) VARIABLE COST 4 the variable cost is also high in this mode of transport. DOCUMENTATION 3 in air mode of transportation, the documentation is quite CONVENIENCE high as it goes through a lot of checking and cross- checking procedures. SUITABILITY FOR 1 transportation through this mode is very much suitable as PRODUCT there is minimal chances of getting damaged TRAVELLING TIME 1 through air the travelling time is also minimum, and the product can reach the destination at a quick time. OPERATIONAL 3 it is not that convenient or that hard to operate and it CONVENIENCE takes less people to supervise the whole operation from place of origin to place of destination. MODE : WATER | RATING: 4 Parameters Ratings Reasons the transport through water takes a lot of time and for the 4 land locked countries access to water ways are difficult. Reach Moreover, inland water ways trading is now obsolete due to irregularity in the river flows. the availability is also a question when it comes to water AVAILABILITY 4 ways as it is not always available and not everywhere. For example, places like Saudi Arabia water ways is next to impossible. RELIABILITY 3 well though transport through waterways are free from traffic and all but cyclones in the oceans can also cost a bit damage to the products that are being transported.
FLEXIBILITY TO 3 well the ships do travel following a coordinate through
CHANGE THE ROUTE which they travel and if they
FIXED COST (COST
FOR CREATING THE MODE OF TRANSPORT OR REACHING THE 3 well the fixed cost in the water ways is not much except PLACE WHERETHE for the cost that is boned by the ship company to maintain MODE OF the ship TRANSPORT IS AVAILABLE.) VARIABLE COST 4 variable cost is also not that much when it comes to water transport. Cost related to loading and unloading is what is incurred. DOCUMENTATION 3 when goods approach the ports bill of lading is required CONVENIENCE for the clearance and the papers are duly singed which can facilitate for the free and fast movement of the goods. SUITABILITY FOR 3 water ways is quite suitable for sending a large amount of PRODUCT products but at the same time the damages that is incurred are also minimum and only during the time of loading/unloading. TRAVELLING TIME 5 travelling through water ways is very time-consuming. For the company which are situated closed to the port can get the product quite faster compared to those who are situated bit far from the cost areas. OPERATIONAL 4 a lot of people are required in the loading and unloading CONVENIENCE of the products that have reached the port.
MODE :RAIL |RATING : 2
Parameters Ratings Reasons this type of transport is which is available in almost all the 2 parts of the country. Special tracks are laid for the heavy Reach industry where the mode of transport solely depends on railways. almost everywhere this part is available and easily AVAILABILITY 1 accessible at low cost.
RELIABILITY 3 goods transported are safe but sometimes do mishandling
happen which may damage the product.
FLEXIBILITY TO 4 once a route is taken like from Mumbai to Pune change of
CHANGE THE ROUTE tracks is not possible but an alternative route can be designed but at that point instantly it is not possible.
FIXED COST (COST
FOR CREATING THE MODE OF TRANSPORT OR REACHING THE 2 the cost of the transport by rail is low as only the freight PLACE WHERETHE charges are what requires MODE OF TRANSPORT IS AVAILABLE.) VARIABLE COST 2 again at very less cost the goods can be sent to and forth. DOCUMENTATION 3 dispatch of the goods is not that problematic unless there CONVENIENCE is trouble and troubleshooting becomes a problem SUITABILITY FOR in transit many at times it has being reported that the PRODUCT 4 product got destroyed and also negligence on the part of the personnel is also responsible for such act. TRAVELLING TIME 3 the time also vary from place to place as rail takes time to travel OPERATIONAL it’s easy to operate as since the supplier can send the CONVENIENCE 2 goods to the customers and the customer can arrange for himself his own transportation to carry the goods.
Parameters Ratings Reasons
5 Reach is very bad in pipeline because it can transport only Reach where pipeline infrastructure is good enough.
AVAILABILITY 5 Availability is also not good because it is not available
everywhere. RELIABILITY 3 More or less, it is reliable mode.
FLEXIBILITY TO 5 route cannot be changed it has to flow through the
CHANGE THE ROUTE pipeline only.
FIXED COST (COST
FOR CREATING THE MODE OF TRANSPORT OR REACHING THE 2 Fixed cost is not much in pipeline. PLACE WHERETHE MODE OF TRANSPORT IS AVAILABLE.) VARIABLE COST 1 Variable cost is also not much more. DOCUMENTATION CONVENIENCE 1 Much documentation is not required. SUITABILITY FOR Suitability of product is very bad because it is usually made PRODUCT 5 to transport water, natural gas , petrol etc. TRAVELLING TIME 3 Travelling time is not very bad and not very good at the same time OPERATIONAL Operational convenience is good. It is convenient to CONVENIENCE 2 operate pipeline. MODE :PIPELINE |RATING : 5
Parameters Ratings Reasons
1 reach through roads is very easy and convent Reach
AVAILABILITY 1 almost everywhere roads are constructed where the
goods can be taken easily and conveniently RELIABILITY 3 its more or less reliable source of transport
FLEXIBILITY TO 3 cost is not that to be boned
CHANGE THE ROUTE
FIXED COST (COST
FOR CREATING THE MODE OF TRANSPORT OR REACHING THE 4 variable may incur like vehicle stopped at toll or any other PLACE WHERETHE tax-paying roads or bridges. MODE OF TRANSPORT IS AVAILABLE.) VARIABLE COST very less documentation is required only a challan or the 4 invoice will do DOCUMENTATION CONVENIENCE 1 very less documentation is required only a challan or the invoice will do SUITABILITY FOR may or may not damage all depends on the condition of PRODUCT 3 the road and on the handling process. TRAVELLING TIME 5 it takes time to go by road OPERATIONAL only the driver and one helper can be suitable for loading CONVENIENCE 1 and unloading unless the goods are of heavy nature.
