DSE8760 / DSE8660 With no Bus Breaker

• DESCRIPTION
The Mains Controllers (DSE8760 / DSE8660) were designed to operate with both a mains AND a bus load switching
device. This document details how to achieve the functionality of a system where the generator bus load switch device
is NOT fitted.

When the generator controller (DSE8710 / DSE8610) closes its breaker onto the generator common bus with the
mains breaker is closed, the generator is directly connected to the mains as there is no common bus breaker to isolate
the common bus from the mains. Until the DSEXX60 controller closes a common bus breaker, it will not control the
power of the generator(s). As there is no bus breaker for the DSEXX60 to control, it will need to be simulated
externally. This will then enable the DSEXX60 to control the power of the generator(s). However, we first need to
instruct the DSEXX10 generator controller what to do when it first closes its breaker to the mains, before simulating
the closure of the common bus breaker.

• DSEXX60 CONFIGURATION

The DSEXX60 controller must be configured for

‘Immediate Mains Dropout’. When there is no
bus breaker for the DSEXX60 to control, there is
no way to isolate the common bus from the mains
supply. Configuring ‘Immediate Mains Dropout’
gives this isolation when the mains supply has
failed.

The DSEXX60 controller must have the following

logic using the internal PLC logic editor. When
there is no bus breaker for the DSEXX60 to control
the level of protection is greatly reduced as there is
no way to isolate the common bus. If the DSEXX60
module senses the simulated common bus breaker
has opened, it will assume the live bus is isolated
from the live mains and close the mains breaker
(which could be out of sync). The following logic
will prevent this from happening.

The DSEXX60 controller must have an output

configured for ‘Mains Failed To Open’. If the
mains fails to open, the common generator bus will
be directly connect to the mains as there is no
common bus breaker to give isolation. The output
is required to feed a battery negative signal into the
configured ‘Mains Failed To Open’ input of all of
the generator controllers (DSEXX10) to stop them
closing onto the common bus.

• DSEXX60 WIRING
One side of a normally closed contact from the external slave relay connected to the DSEXX60 for ‘Open Bus
Output’ must be connected to battery negative. This is used to switch the input configured to ‘Bus Closed Auxiliary’.
This will simulate the closing of the bus breaker.

• DSEXX10 CONFIGURATION

All the DSEXX10 controllers in the system must have

an input configured for ‘Mains Parallel Mode’ this
instructs the generator controller that when the mains
breaker is closed that it is in parallel with the mains
and that ‘fixed export’ mode should be entered.

It is usually desirable to set the DSEXX10 controller to

produce no power during the short time that it is not
being controlled by the DSEXX60 controller. This is
performed in the DSEXX10 module’s configuration
software under Load Levels. Please refer to the
product’s software manual for further details on this
parameter.

All the DSEXX10 controllers in the system must have

an input configured as shown; this instructs the
generator controller that when the mains breaker has
failed to open that it should not start or close onto the
common generator bus as there is no isolation from
the mains incoming supply.

• DSEXX10 WIRING
An auxiliary of the mains load switch is required to feed a battery negative signal into the configured ‘Mains Parallel
Mode’ input of all of the generator controllers (DSEXX10).
An auxiliary from the output ‘Mains Failed To Open’ from the DSEXX60 controller is required to feed a battery
negative signal into the user configured ‘Mains Failed To Open’ input of all of the generator controllers (DSEXX10) to
stop them closing onto the common bus when the mains breaker has failed to open.
