Family/Community Connection or Extension:

At home, families will be encouraged to create and discuss other Ben Franklin inventions with
their children. Families can create their own swim flippers or a long arm at home and families
can discuss the purposes of these inventions.

Pre-Assessment: There will be an informal pre-assessment. Students will be asked, “What

inventions were invented byBenjamin Franklin and why do you think he created these
inventions?” I will use a checklist to assess students.

Lesson Procedure and Activities:

Introduction:
I will introduce the Ben & Now book to students. I will explain that we will read through the
book to discover some of Franklin’s inventions. Then, I will briefly explain that students will
have an opportunity to create one of Franklin’s inventions at the end of the lesson.

Activities: This is a detailed, step-by-step list of the activities. Include questions you may
ask the students, if applicable. Be very specific so anyone can follow the directions to
conduct the lesson.
1. First, students will be called by table color to sit on the carpet.
2. Second, I will introduce the Ben & Now book to students. I will explain that we will read
through the book to discover some of Franklin’s inventions. Then, I will briefly explain
that students will have an opportunity to create one of Franklin’s inventions at the end of
the lesson.
3. Third, I will display the book on the document camera.
4. Fourth, I will read-loud Ben & Now: The Modern Inventions of Benjamin Franklin (We
will read the first half of the book).
5. Fifth, I will introduce the bifocals activity. I will state, “Ben Franklin had to create a
model and test his inventions to make sure they work. Today, we will also create a model
and test it if it works. As a class, everyone will get to create bifocals using pipe cleaners.
Before we begin, we will watch a video on how to create the bifocals”.
6. Sixth, play the “How to Make Glasses out of Pipe Cleaners” video.
7. Seventh, students will be sent back to their seats to start on their models (materials are
ready at their tables). They will get 5-8 minutes to complete their bifocals.
8. Eighth, the exit ticket will get passed out to students. Students will only need 5 minutes to
complete the exit ticket. Students will raise their hand once they finish the exit tickets. I
will pass out the material bags as they finish their exit ticket.
9. Ninth, I will wrap up the lesson by asking students to share one thing they learned, one
thing they found interesting, and one question they still have about Ben Franklin’s
inventions.

Closure: To briefly summarize the lesson, we will go over Franklin’s inventions. Students
will get the opportunity to share what inventions Franklin invented. I will ask students to
share one thing they learned, one thing they found interesting, and one question they still
have about Ben Franklin’s inventions.

Differentiation: I will display the Ben & Now book on the document camera. The book will be
read aloud. There will be a whole class discussion after the read-aloud. I will provide step by
instructions on the hands-on activity. There will be a video on steps to how to make bifocals out
of pipe cleaners. I will model the activity for students to see under the document camera.
Individual assistance will be provided for students who need help with the bifocals.

Formative Assessment/Evaluation: There will be an exit for students to complete. Students

will be given 3 inventions to match to its purpose.
