A Rainforest Adventure

Last summer, four friends – Tom, Jack, Sally and Samantha - trawelled with their families to the Amazon
rainforest on holiday. The teenagers were not supposed to walk through the forest on their own but
they did not resist having a rainforest adventure!

They set off early in the morning with a pair of binoculars, a matchbox, a camera, a torch, some
sandwiches and some water in their rucksacks. At the last minute, Sally and Samantha decided not to
go, because they thought they’d get too tired.

Tom was taking landscape photos while Jack was trying to observe the birds and animals with his
binoculars. Under a huge old tree, they found a canoe that had certainly been there for a long time
because it was covered with a heap of dry branches and leaves. The boys were having so much fun that
they had completely forgotten to mark their way on the map. They had seen so many beautiful birds
and noisy monkeys leaping from branch to branch, they had heard such strange sounds as they were
walring through the forest! They had never experienced anything like that before. At about midday, the
boys were hungry and thirsty. That was when they remembered that the girls had put the sandwiches in
their rucksacks.

Now, with no mobile phones and without anything to eat, what would they do?

Part 2

Tom and Jack continued walking but they were tired and worried. Jack did what he could to show
optimism. ‘ Look! If we take that track, we’ll get back in no time! It’s a shortcut to the village′, he said.

Time went by and the boys did not know what to do. It was getting darker and darker and they still
couldn’t see the lights of the village. ′Don’t you think we should camp under that tree and wait till dawn
to go on? ′, Tom asked. ′I think you’re right, Tom’, Jack answered. ′If we had helped the girls pack our
things, we wouldn’t have ended up starving in the forest′, he added.

Although they did not talk about their fears, they were totally confused. While they were preparing to
lie down under a big tree and spend the night in the darkness of the forest, Tom saw lights twinkling in a
small wooden house built on stilts by the river. The boys looked at each other and started to run down
the path. Before long, they were knocking at the little house door. An old couple answered it, smiled at
them, but they couldn’t understand their language. Even so, they must have understood that they boys
had got lost in the forest. So they invited them to go in with a wave and a smile. The old lady opened a
room door and showed them some mats where they could sit.

Part 3

The woman went out and soon came back with some fruit and sweets. She put an oil lamp on a small
table and offered them some coconut water. The boys were too tired. They fell asleep and woke up
when the sun was rising. A cock was crowing as the nice old couple walked to the spot where the boys
had seen an old wooden boat the day before. The boys and the old couple lifted it, raised it above their
heads and carried it to the river. Then, they rowed down the winding river. Half an hour later, the boys
arrived at the boatyard where their families were waiting for them. ′Thank goodness, you’re safe!′,
Jack’s father shouted as the boat was getting near the shore. ′And thank you for helping our boys′, their
mothers said to the old couple. They simply smiled and waved at the people around them.

Том фотографировал пейзажи, а Джек пытался наблюдать за птицами и животными в бинокль.

Под огромным старым деревом они нашли каноэ, которое наверняка стояло там давно, потому
что оно было покрыто кучей сухих веток и листьев. Мальчикам было так весело, что они
совершенно забыли отметить свой путь на карте. Они видели столько прекрасных птиц и шумных
обезьян, прыгающих с ветки на ветку, слышали такие странные звуки, когда бродили по лесу!
Ничего подобного они раньше не испытывали. Около полудня мальчики были голодны и хотели
пить. Тогда-то они и вспомнили, что девочки положили бутерброды в рюкзаки.

Теперь, без мобильных телефонов и без еды, что они будут делать?

2 Часть

Том и Джек продолжали идти, но они были усталыми и обеспокоенными. Джек сделал все, что
мог, чтобы проявить оптимизм. ' Смотреть! Если мы пойдем по этому пути, мы вернемся в
мгновение ока! Это короткий путь к деревне», — сказал он.

Время шло, и мальчики не знали, что делать. Становилось все темнее и темнее, а огней деревни
все еще не было видно. — Ты не думаешь, что нам следует разбить лагерь под тем деревом и
дождаться рассвета, чтобы продолжить путь? — спросил Том. — Думаю, ты прав, Том, — ответил
Джек. «Если бы мы помогли девочкам упаковать наши вещи, мы бы не умерли с голоду в лесу», —
добавил он.

Хотя они не говорили о своих страхах, они были совершенно сбиты с толку. Пока они готовились
лечь под большое дерево и провести ночь в темноте леса, Том увидел мерцающие огни в
маленьком деревянном домике, построенном на сваях у реки. Мальчики переглянулись и
побежали по дорожке. Вскоре они постучали в дверь маленького домика. Ответила пожилая пара,
улыбнулась им, но они не могли понять их языка. Тем не менее, они, должно быть, поняли, что
мальчики заблудились в лесу. Поэтому они пригласили их войти, помахав рукой и улыбнувшись.
Старушка открыла дверь комнаты и показала им несколько циновок, на которых они могли
сидеть.

3 Часть
Женщина вышла и вскоре вернулась с фруктами и сладостями. Она поставила масляную лампу на
столик и предложила им немного кокосовой воды. Мальчики слишком устали. Они заснули и
проснулись, когда взошло солнце. Кричал петух, когда милая пожилая пара шла к тому месту, где
накануне мальчики видели старую деревянную лодку. Мальчики и пожилая пара подняли его,
подняли над головой и понесли к реке. Затем они поплыли по извилистой реке. Через полчаса
мальчики прибыли на верфь, где их ждали их семьи. «Слава богу, ты в безопасности!» — кричал
отец Джека, когда лодка приближалась к берегу. «И спасибо, что помогаете нашим мальчикам»,
— сказали пожилой паре их матери. Они просто улыбались и махали людям вокруг них.
