Certainly those who spread the message of Godhead are most munificent.

The nectar of Your words and the descriptions of Your activities are the life and soul of those
suffering in this material world. These narrations, transmitted by learned sages, eradicate one's sinful reactions and bestow
good fortune upon whoever hears them. These narrations are broadcast all over the world and are filled with spiritual power. Certainly those
who spread the message of Godhead are most munificent.
PURPORT
King Pratäparudra recited this verse to Çré Caitanya Mahäprabhu during Lord Jagannätha's Ratha-yäträ festival. While the Lord was resting in a
garden, King Pratäparudra humbly entered and began massaging His legs and lotus feet. Then the King recited the Thirty-first Chapter of the
Tenth Canto of the Çrémad-Bhägavatam, the songs of the gopés. The Caitanya-caritämåta relates that when Lord Caitanya heard this verse,
beginning tava kathämåtam, He immediately arose in ecstatic love and embraced King Pratäparudra.

TRANSLATION
The supreme occupation [dharma] (paro dharma) for all humanity (sa vai pumsah) is that by
which men can attain to loving devotional service (yato bhaktir adhoksaje) unto the
transcendent Lord. Such devotional service must be unmotivated and uninterrupted (ahaituky
apratihatä) to completely satisfy the self (yayätmä suprasédati)

TRANSLATION
By rendering devotional service unto the Personality of Godhead, Çré Kåñëa, one immediately
acquires causeless knowledge and detachment from the world.

the most sublime and radiant mellow of devotional service, the mellow of conjugal love.

Resplendent with the radiance of molten gold,

May the Supreme Lord who is known as the son of Çrématé Çacé-devé be transcendentally situated in the innermost chambers of your heart.

relatives; nåëäm-of ordinary men; pitèëäm-of the forefathers; na-not; kiìkaraù-the servant; na—
nor; ayam—this one; åëé—debtor; ca—also; räjan—O King; sarva-ätmanä—with his whole
being; yaù—a person who; çaraëam—shelter; çaraëyam—the Supreme Personality of Godhead,
who affords shelter to all; gataù—approached; mukundam—Mukunda; parihåtya—giving up;
kartam—duties.
TRANSLATION
O King, one who has given up all material duties and has taken full shelter of the lotus feet of
Mukunda, who offers shelter to all, is not indebted to the demigods, great sages, ordinary living
beings, relatives, friends, mankind or even one's forefathers who have passed away. Since all
such classes of living entities are part and parcel of the Supreme Lord, one who has surrendered
to the Lord's service has no need to serve such persons separately.
 
Devotional service above all the processess of self realization

sarva-śāstre kahe krishna-bhaktira vyākhyāna
jñāna, yoga, tapo-dharma nāhi māne āna

SYNONYMS
sarva-śāstre — in all revealed scriptures; kahe — says; krishna-bhaktira — of
devotional service to Lord Krishna; vyākhyāna — explanation; jñāna — philosophical
speculation; yoga — mystic hatha-yoga; tapas — austerities; dharma— religious
procedures; nāhi — does not; māne — accept; āna — other.

TRANSLATION

In all the revealed scriptures of Vedic culture, devotional service to Lord Krishna is
explained throughout. Therefore devotees of Lord Krishna do not recognize the
processes of philosophical speculation, mystic yoga, unnecessary austerity and so-
called religious rituals. They do not accept any process but devotional service.

PURPORT

Our Krishna consciousness movement follows this principle. We do not recognize any
method for spiritual realization other than Krishna consciousness, devotional service.
Sometimes we are criticized by groups following jñāna, yoga, tapas or dharma, but
fortunately we are unable to make any compromises with them. We simply stand on
the platform of devotional service and preach the same principles all over the world.

kämasya nendriya-prétir
Life's desires should never be directed toward sense gratification
läbho jéveta yävatä
One should desire only a healthy life, or self-preservation,
jévasya tattva-jijïäsä
a human being is meant for inquiry about the Absolute Truth.
närtho yaç ceha karmabhiù
Nothing else should be the goal of one's works.

TRANSLATION
Life's desires should never be directed toward sense gratification. One should desire only a healthy life, or self-preservation,

Never satisfied and burns like fire
SYNONYMS
ävåtam—covered; jïänam—pure consciousness; etena—by this; jïäninaù—of the knower; nitya-
vairiëä—by the eternal enemy; käma-rüpeëa—in the form of lust; kaunteya—O son of Kunté;
duñpüreëa—never to be satisfied; analena—by the fire; ca—also.
TRANSLATION
Thus the wise living entity's pure consciousness becomes covered by his eternal enemy in the
form of lust, which is never satisfied and which burns like fire.
PURPORT
It is said in the Manu-småti that lust cannot be satisfied by any amount of sense enjoyment, just
as fire is never extinguished by a constant supply of fuel. In the material world, the center of all
activities is sex, and thus this material world is called maithunya-ägära, or the shackles of sex
life. In the ordinary prison house, criminals are kept within bars; similarly, the criminals who
are disobedient to the laws of the Lord are shackled by sex life. Advancement of material
civilization on the basis of sense gratification means increasing the duration of the material
existence of a living entity. Therefore, this lust is the symbol of ignorance by which the living
entity is kept within the material world. While one enjoys sense gratification, it may be that
there is some feeling of happiness, but actually that so-called feeling of happiness is the
ultimate enemy of the sense enjoyer. [As-They-Surrender-Unto-Me ]

vyayaù—unnecessary waste of life.
TRANSLATION
The devotees of the Lord are accustomed to licking up the honey available from the
lotus feet of the Lord. What is the use of topics which simply waste one's valuable
life?

saù - he (Mahäräja Ambaréña); vai - indeed; manaù - his mind; kåñëa-pada-
aravindayoù - (fixed) upon the two lotus feet of Lord Kåñëa; vacäàsi - his words;
vaikuëöha-guëa-anuvarëane - describing the glories of Kåñëa; karau - his two hands;
hareù mandira-märjana-ädiñu - in activities like cleansing the temple of Hari, the
Supreme Personality of Godhead; çrutim - his ear; cakära - engaged; acyuta - of or
about Kåñëa, who never falls down; sat-kathä-udaye - in hearing the transcendental
narrations.
 
Mahäräja Ambaréña always engaged his mind in meditating upon the lotus feet of
Kåñëa, his words in describing the glories of the Lord, his hands in cleansing the
Lord’s temple, and his ears in hearing the words spoken by Kåñëa or about Kåñëa.

mukunda-liìga-älaya-darçane - in seeing the Deity and temples and holy dhämas of
Mukunda; dåçau - his two eyes; tat-bhåtya - of the servants of Kåñëa; gätra-sparçe - in
touching the bodies; aìga-saìgamam - contact of his body; ghräëam ca - and his sense
of smell; tat-päda - of His lotus feet; saroja - of the lotus flower; saurabhe - in
(smelling) the fragrance; çrémat-tulasyäù - of the tulasé leaves; rasanäm - his tongue;
tat-arpite - in the prasäda offered to the Lord.
 
Mahäräja Ambaréña engaged his eyes in seeing the Deity of Kåñëa, Kåñëa’s temples
and Kåñëa’s places like Mathurä and Våndävana. He engaged his sense of touch in
touching the bodies of the Lord’s devotees, he engaged his sense of smell in smelling
the fragrance of tulasé offered to the Lord, and he engaged his tongue in tasting the
Lord’s prasäda.

pädau hareù kñetra-padänusarpaëe
 
çiro håñékeça-padäbhivandane
 
kämaà ca däsye na tu käma-kämyayä

pädau - his two legs; hareù - of the Personality of Godhead; kñetra - holy places like
the temple or Våndävana and Dvärakä; pada-anusarpaëe - walking to those places;
çiraù - the head; håñékeça - of Kåñëa, the master of the senses; pada-abhivandane - in
offering obeisances to the lotus feet; kämam ca - and his desires; däsye - in being
engaged as a servant; na - not; tu - indeed; käma-kämyayä - with a desire for sense
gratification; yathä - as; uttamaçloka-jana-äçrayä - if one takes shelter of a devotee
such as Prahläda; ratiù - attachment.
 
Mahäräja Ambaréña engaged his legs in walking to the holy places and temples of the
Lord, his head in bowing down before the Lord, and all his desires in serving the Lord,
twenty-four hours a day. Indeed, Mahäräja Ambaréña never desired anything for his
own sense gratification. He engaged all his senses in devotional service, in various
engagements related to the Lord. This is the way to increase attachment for the Lord
and be completely free from all material desires.
HEARING ABOUT LORD IS THE MEDICINE FOR CONDITIONED SOUL

This glorification is relished by those who are released from performing material activities

Hearing about SPOG is the Right medicine for the conditioned soul

except a butcher or one who is killing his own self?

nivåtta—released from; tarñaiù—lust or material activities; upagéyamänät—which is described
or sung; bhava-auñadhät—which is the right medicine for the material disease; çrotra—the
process of aural reception; manaù—the subject matter of thought for the mind; abhirämät—from
the pleasing vibrations from such glorification; kaù—who; uttamaçloka—of the Supreme
Personality of Godhead; guëa-anuvädät—from describing such activities; pumän—a person;
virajyeta—can keep himself aloof; vinä—except; paçu-ghnät—either a butcher or one who is
killing his own personal existence.
TRANSLATION
Glorification of the Supreme Personality of Godhead (uttamsloka guëa-anuvädät ) is performed
in the paramparä system; that is, it is conveyed from spiritual master to disciple. Such
glorification is relished by those no longer interested in the false, temporary glorification of this
cosmic manifestation. (nivrtta tarsaih guëa-anuvädät)Descriptions of the Lord are the right
medicine for the conditioned soul undergoing repeated birth and death. (bhava ausadhat srotra
manah abhiramat)Therefore, who will cease hearing such glorification of the Lord (kah
uttamsloka guna anuvadat) except a butcher or one who is killing his own self? (puman virajyet
vina pasu ghnat)

evaà janaà nipatitaà prabhavähi-küpe
I was gradually falling into a blind well full of snakes, following the general populace.
kämäbhikämam anu yaù prapatan prasaìgät
because of my association with material desires, one after another

But Your servant Närada Muni kindly accepted me as his disciple and instructed me how to achieve this transcendental position.
so 'haà kathaà nu visåje tava bhåtya-seväm
Therefore, my first duty is to serve him. How could I leave his service?

TRANSLATION
My dear Lord, O Supreme Personality of Godhead, because of my association with material desires, one after another, I was
gradually falling into a blind well full of snakes, following the general populace. But Your servant Närada Muni kindly accepted me
as his disciple and instructed me how to achieve this transcendental position. Therefore, my first duty is to serve him. How could I
leave his service?

(5.18.12):
yasyästi bhaktir bhagavaty akiïcanä
sarvair guëais tatra samäsate suräù
One who attains pure unalloyed devotional service to the Supreme Lord develops all the good qualities of the demigods,
haräv abhaktasya kuto mahad-guëä
whereas a person who doesn't develop such service, despite all material qualifications
mano-rathenäsati dhävato bahiù
for he hovers on the mental platform
"One who attains pure unalloyed devotional service to the Supreme Lord develops all the good
qualities of the demigods, whereas a person who doesn't develop such service, despite all
material qualifications, is sure to go astray, for he hovers on the mental platform." Thus material
qualifications are valueless without devotional service.

Adi 13.1
sa prasīdatu caitanya-
devo yasya prasādatah
tal-līlā-varnane yogyah
sadyah syād adhamo 'py ayam

SYNONYMS
sah — He; prasīdatu — may bestow His blessings; caitanya-devah —
Lord Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu; yasya — of whom; prasādatah — by the grace; tat-
līlā — His pastimes; varnane — in the description; yogyah — able; sadyah —
immediately; syāt — becomes possible; adhamah — the most fallen; api —
although; ayam — I am.

TRANSLATION

I wish the grace of Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu, by whose mercy even one who is
fallen can describe the pastimes of the Lord.

ajïaç cäçraddadhänaç ca
ignorant and faithless persons who have no faith on the scriptures
saàçayätmä vinaçyati
who doubt the revealed scriptures do not attain God consciousness; they fall down
näyaà loko 'sti na paro
na sukhaà saàçayätmanaù
For the doubting soul there is happiness neither in this world nor in the next.

ajïaù—a fool who has no knowledge in standard scriptures; ca—and; açraddadhänaù—without
faith in revealed scriptures; ca—also; saàçaya—of doubts; ätmä—a person; vinaçyati—falls
back; na—never; ayam—in this; lokaù—world; asti—there is; na—nor; paraù—in the next life;
na—not; sukham—happiness; saàçaya—doubtful; ätmanaù—of the person.
TRANSLATION
But ignorant and faithless persons who doubt the revealed scriptures do not attain God
consciousness; they fall down. For the doubting soul there is happiness neither in this world nor
in the next.

PURPORT
Out of many standard and authoritative revealed scriptures, the Bhagavad-gétä is the best.
Persons who are almost like animals have no faith in, or knowledge of, the standard revealed
scriptures; and some, even though they have knowledge of, or can cite passages from, the
revealed scriptures, have actually no faith in these words. And even though others may have
faith in scriptures like Bhagavad-gétä, they do not believe in or worship the Personality of
Godhead, Çré Kåñëa. Such persons cannot have any standing in Kåñëa consciousness. They fall
down. Out of all the above-mentioned persons, those who have no faith and are always doubtful
make no progress at all. Men without faith in God and His revealed word find no good in this
world, nor in the next. For them there is no happiness whatsoever. One should therefore follow
the principles of revealed scriptures with faith and thereby be raised to the platform of
knowledge. Only this knowledge will help one become promoted to the transcendental platform
of spiritual understanding. In other words, doubtful persons have no status whatsoever in
spiritual emancipation. One should therefore follow in the footsteps of great äcäryas who are in

HOPING AGAINST HOPE FOR THE MERCY OF THE LORD
 
tat te ’nukampäà su-samékñamäëo
one who earnestly waits for You to bestow Your causeless mercy upon him
bhuïjäna evätma-kåtaà vipäkam
 all the while patiently suffering the reactions of his past misdeeds
håd-väg-vapurbhir vidadhan namas te
offering You respectful obeisances with his heart, words and body 
jéveta yo mukti-pade sa däya-bhäk
is surely eligible for liberation, for it has become his rightful claim`
 
tat - therefore; te - Your; anukampäm - compassion; su-samékñamäëaù - earnestly hoping for;
bhuïjänaù - enduring; eva - certainly; ätma-kåtam - done by himself; vipäkam - fruitive results;
håt - with his heart; väk - words; vapurbhiù - and body; vidadhan - offering; namaù -
obeisances; te - unto You; jéveta - lives; yaù - anyone who; mukti-pade - to the position of
liberation; saù - he; däya-bhäk - the rightful heir.
 
My dear Lord, one who earnestly waits (su-samékñamäëo) for You to bestow Your causeless

misdeeds(bhuïjäna evätma-kåtaà vipäkam) and offering You respectful obeisances with his
heart, words and body (håd-väg-vapurbhir vidadhan namas te), is surely eligible for liberation,
for it has become his rightful claim (jéveta yo mukti-pade sa däya-bhäk)
 
Why does he wait for, what it is his motivation?
a. He has complete faith on the Lord that he is going to give me protection.
b. He is no other shelter.
