Read the text and then discuss with the class

A camping trip gone wrong

Once upon a time I… Well, it wasn’t that long ago and it didn’t happen to me. This story happened to
a friend of mine, who went camping with a bunch of friends.

His name is Matt, and he thinks he is an adventurer. However, the truth is he is a big baby. So I knew
that this trip wasn’t going to end well. And just like I predicted, it went terribly wrong.

They took all the necessary equipment to go camping: the torch, the tent, sleeping bags, compass and,
since they were going to settle near the river, they took their fishing gear. We talked on the phone
before he left and he told me “Don’t worry, dude, we are going to be perfectly safe. We are going to
go hiking through the mountains and then we are going to camp near the river. Before it gets dark, we
are going to put up the tents and, when the night comes, we are going to start a fire.” Yeah, right. Like
if they knew how to start a fire…

Apparently, that’s what they did. But things didn’t go quite as they intended to. After hiking for hours,
they found themselves thirsty and starved, so they stopped at a waterfall. They found, of course,
drinking water for their canteens, but they didn’t have anything to eat. They thought that they would
be able to fish enough to fill their bellies, though they weren’t as lucky (or skillful) as they thought.

Moreover, dark clouds started approaching their way. Suddenly, a heavy storm poured down on them.
They hadn’t taken any extra clothes because they were like “We are machos and we don’t need clean
clothes or a bath for 3 days”. Very clever, guys… In addition, they’d left their equipment on the bank
of the river. Unfortunately, the river flooded and swept everything on its way, including their gear.

They spent the night wet to the bones, cold and scared of the sounds from the trees surrounding them.
They are never going to go camping again.

Reading comprehension:

1) The boy’s name is: 3) They fished many fish T F

a)Jonah b)Matt c)Tom 4) They lose their equipment due to

2) They are camping: 4) They can’t wait to go camping again.
