Reaud Guest House reopening April 5

For those attending to loved ones in
Beaumont hospitals, leaving for the long
haul home is unrealistic – no one wants
to be far away if the patient’s prognosis
changes, and oftentimes, hospital stays
are excruciatingly tiring for caregivers
and visitors as well, making traveling
miles and miles back home difficult to

Business Spotlight: Bo-Mac Contractors

Bo-Mac honors longtime service with barge naming

Bo-Mac Contractors surprised longtime employ-
ee Robert “Lynn” Johnson, Executive Vice Presi-
dent, General Manager, Piling and Marine Divi-
sions, by naming the company’s new barge in his
honor during a christening ceremony Feb. 10.
Johnson thought he was attending the christening
of the “Mississippi” barge, but at the ceremony he
learned that his Bo-Mac coworkers had been care-
fully hiding its real name – Barge Lynn J.
“We have two barges named after our owners, the
Heisley family of the Heico Companies – the
Michael H and the Emily – but we usually name
them after a river or a state,” Johnson described.
“This one was in New Orleans, and it was a large
one. We named it Mississippi because we would
probably work in the Mississippi a lot, and here as
well.”
Documentation for the barge had to be signed and
sent to the Coast Guard, and Johnson usually does
the signing, so his staff had to take special measures
to make sure the real name would
remain a mystery until the unveiling.
“We went through the process, and I
was signing papers. I didn’t know I was
signing fake papers,” he laughed. “The
secretaries and folks had the real papers,
and our president was signing them…

sure everything looked nice,” Johnson recalled. “The ready. They’ll be here in 10 minutes.’” “It was really nice,” Johnson said. “They got my
mom and dad to come. My dad actually worked with
us to build the deckhouse unit that’s on the barge in
Beaumont. I was obviously a little shocked wondering
what they were doing there. It was a nice day. They
suggested that my mom be the one to swing the cham-
pagne bottle and break it.”
Bo-Mac Contractors provides civil, piling and
marine construction services for any size project, in
many types of environments and across a wide geo-
graphical range. Johnson started his career at Bo-Mac
and has worked in Southeast Texas for more than four
decades in total.
“All in all, I’ve been here for 40-plus years, and
I’ve been doing what I’m doing for about 33 years
now,” said Johnson. “I was 18 years old when I started
working here for the very first time.
“Bo-Mac has grown a lot since then. It’s all due to
the people. We have a wonderful group of people
here. I’m part of a really good group of people and
organization. That’s the reason we’re here today, and
if we’re here tomorrow, that will be the reason. I’m
proud to be a part of it.”
Johnson said he was deeply touched by the com-
pany’s recognition.
“It was truly an honor, and I really appreciate them
for doing all that,” he shared.

‘100 Black Men’ give back

By B. Scott McLendon
Staff Writer

Feb. 27, armed with $2,000 worth of

HEB gift cards, representatives from the
100 Black Men of Greater Beaumont set
out to relieve residents’ grocery bills in the
aftermath of a historic ice storm.
“The ice storm came and people lost
electricity, while people were already deal-
ing with COVID-19, so we thought we
could alleviate some of the burden on
them,” said Vernon Durden, former presi-
dent. “This money comes from the com-
munity since we’re a 501(c) (nonprofit).
Some of our money comes from grants,
some from ExxonMobil, all different plac-
es.”
The charitable men said their goal was
to give $50 gift cards to “nice people.”
Cards were given to parents toting tots,
college-age students, senior couples, all to
their delight.
“Oh, I couldn’t believe it,” said Charles
Lee about receiving a $50 gift card to sub-
sidize his grocery bill. “We’ve been buy-

SHOULD YOU BUY OR RENT A HOME? Opinions

The pros and cons of renting versus buying The opinions expressed in this column are those of the author. They do not
purport to reflect the opinions or views of The Examiner.
For many folks, the lyrics of a 1960s rock song summarize the American
dream: "Our house is a very, very, very fine house." According to U.S. Census
figures, about two-thirds of American families are homeowners. Respect
But buying a house or condo may not be the best choice for every family in
every situation. Renting offers the following advantages:
• Greater flexibility. When renting a house, apartment, or condo, you
have the option of moving at the end of the lease term. No need to contact
a realtor, no hassle with buying or selling. For those who want to keep their
options open, especially in terms of job location or dwelling size, renting may
prove the better choice.
• Opportunities to invest elsewhere. Instead of plowing your savings
into a home, you might get a better return by contributing to mutual funds or
other investments. Depending on the housing market in your city, the annual
increase in your home's value may barely outpace inflation.
• Lower cost. Apartments are often smaller than homes, so heating and
cooling expenses tend to be lower. If you don't have a lawn, you won't incur the
cost of water to keep it green. Roof leaking? Appliances on the blink? Call the
landlord. Home repair and maintenance aren't normally your responsibilities.

Of course, as many realtors and financial analysts rightly point out,

homeowners also enjoy significant advantages:
• Greater flexibility. Ironically, homeowners enjoy certain freedoms
denied to renters. If a homeowner wants to paint a wall or hang a picture, he
