【講義の目的・内容（Course Purpose and Description）】

This course is designed for students with the upper beginner to intermediate level background in Japanese (TJ3-TJ4). The goal for this semester is to improve
their skills for reading the texts in a variety of categories. In each class, while necessary strategies in mind, students read logical texts and acquire formal
vocabularies, sentence patterns, and sentence structures, which are necessary for academic studies.

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1) Read and understand reading materials at the upper beginner to intermediate level
2) Summarize and explain what they have read using appropriate sentence structure

【指導方法（Instructional Methods）】
Peer activities and feedback will be strongly encouraged
Examples of activities:
1. Pre-reading activities: brainstorming, pre-discussion of topics, clarification of vocabulary and grammar items
2. Reading activities using different strategies: rapid reading, careful reading, jigsaw-reading etc.
〈Method of teaching〉
For non-face-to-face classes, a combination of distance learning (real-time classes) and task-delivered learning (on-demand type classes) will be used. Class
materials will be distributed using ToyoNet-Ace. Questions and answers will be posted on ToyoNet-Ace and Webex teams, and opportunities for real-time
discussion will be provided using Webex or Zoom as well.

【事前・事後学習（Self-study before/after classes）】

Before class (30min): students are expected to look up the meaning of the words in the textbook.
After class (30min): students are expected to complete the assignments and are expected to review what was done in class.

Quizzes: 10%
Assignments: 30%
Mid-term Examination: 20%
Final Examination: 20%
Participation in class activities and attendance: 20%

Grading conforms to Toyo university’s grading standard.
