TOPIC: RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SUB-ATOMIC PARTICLES

Recall: Atom is the smallest particle of an element having the chemical properties of the
element.

The arrangement of electrons in an atom is known as its electronic configuration.

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SUB-ATOMIC PARTICLES

 Atomic Number ( Z)

The atomic number (Z) of an element is the number of protons in the nucleus of the
atoms of that element.

 Mass Number ( A )
The mass number (A) of an element is the number of protons plus the number of
neutrons in the nucleus. Mass number is also called the nucleon number.

So, mass number = no. of protons + no. of nuetrons

A = p + n

Then we can say that:

No. of protons , p = A - n
No. of neutrons, n = A - p

Example:

Atomic number is 6.

No. of protons =

Mass number is 12.

No. of neutrons =
We can also find the amount of protons, electrons and neutrons from the atomic and mass
numbers:
