TOPIC: FRACTIONS PART C
When we arrange in ascending order, we are arranging from the smallest value to
the largest value.
For example:
1 7 3
Arrange , , in ascending order.
2 8 4
(i) Find the smallest number in which all the denominators can be divided
into. For this example its 8 since 2,4 and 8 are all factors of 8.
1 3 7
Answer: , ,
2 4 8
1 3 7
2 4 8
Exercise 1: Arrange in Ascending Order
ARRANGING IN DESCENDING ORDER
When we arrange in descending order, we are arranging from the largest value to
the smallest value.
For example:
1 5 3
Arrange , , in descending order.
2 8 4
(i) Find the smallest number in which all the denominators can be divided
into. For this example its 8 since 2,4 and 8 are all factors of 8.
3 5 1
Answer: , ,
4 8 2
For example:
1 3
Add +
2 4
(i) Find the smallest number in which all the denominators can be divided
into. For this example its 4 since 2 and 4 are all factors of 4.
1 3
+
2 4
𝟐 + 𝟑

𝟐 + 𝟑 𝟓
=
𝟒 𝟒
𝟓 𝟏
So, becomes 𝟏
𝟒 𝟒
1 3 𝟏
Therefore, + =𝟏

2 4
Exercise 3: Add the following improper fractions
ADDITION OF MIXED NUMBERS
For example:
1 3
Add 42 + 24
(i) Add the whole numbers: 4 + 2 = 6
(ii) Find the smallest number in which all the denominators can be divided
into. For this example its 4 since 2 and 4 are all factors of 4.
1 3
42 + 24
𝟐 + 𝟑
𝟔 𝟒
𝟐 + 𝟑 𝟓
=
𝟒 𝟒
𝟓 𝟏
So, becomes 𝟏
𝟒 𝟒
𝟏
(vi) Add the whole number 6 and the mixed number 𝟏
