TOPIC: FRACTIONS PART C

ARRANGING IN ASCENDING ORDER

When we arrange in ascending order, we are arranging from the smallest value to
the largest value.

For example:
1 7 3
Arrange , , in ascending order.
2 8 4

(i) Find the smallest number in which all the denominators can be divided
into. For this example its 8 since 2,4 and 8 are all factors of 8.

(ii) Convert each fraction to a fraction with a denominator of 8.

(iii) Arrange the fraction in order. If you look at it from step 2,

1 7
is the smallest and is the largest.
2 8

1 3 7
Answer: , ,
2 4 8

Let’s look at the on a pie diagram.

1 3 7
2 4 8
Exercise 1: Arrange in Ascending Order
ARRANGING IN DESCENDING ORDER

When we arrange in descending order, we are arranging from the largest value to
the smallest value.

For example:
1 5 3
Arrange , , in descending order.
2 8 4

(i) Find the smallest number in which all the denominators can be divided
into. For this example its 8 since 2,4 and 8 are all factors of 8.

(ii) Convert each fraction to eigths.

(iii) Arrange the fraction in order. If you look at it from step 2,

1 3
is the smallest and is the largest. So we start with the largest.
2 4

3 5 1
Answer: , ,
4 8 2

Let’s look at the on a pie diagram.

3 5 1
4 8 2
Exercise 2: Arrange in Descending Order
ADDITION OF PROPER FRACTIONS

For example:
1 3
Add +
2 4
(i) Find the smallest number in which all the denominators can be divided
into. For this example its 4 since 2 and 4 are all factors of 4.

(ii) Convert each fraction to the same denominator.

1 3
+
2 4

𝟐 + 𝟑
𝟒

(iii) Add the numerators only.

𝟐 + 𝟑 𝟓
=
𝟒 𝟒

(iv) If the answer is an improper fraction, then change it to a mixed nuber or

simplify it.

𝟓 𝟏
So, becomes 𝟏
𝟒 𝟒

1 3 𝟏
Therefore, + =𝟏
𝟒
2 4
Exercise 3: Add the following improper fractions
ADDITION OF MIXED NUMBERS

For example:
1 3
Add 42 + 24
(i) Add the whole numbers: 4 + 2 = 6

(ii) Find the smallest number in which all the denominators can be divided
into. For this example its 4 since 2 and 4 are all factors of 4.

(iii) Convert each fraction to the same denominator.

1 3
42 + 24
𝟐 + 𝟑
𝟔 𝟒

(iv) Add the numerators only.

𝟐 + 𝟑 𝟓
=
𝟒 𝟒

(v) If the answer is an improper fraction, then change it to a mixed nuber or

simplify it.

𝟓 𝟏
So, becomes 𝟏
𝟒 𝟒

𝟏
(vi) Add the whole number 6 and the mixed number 𝟏
𝟒

6 + 1 14 = 7
1
4
1 3 1
Therefore, 4 + 24 = 7
4
2
