Q1 - WHAT TO DO IF ONE OR MORE STUDENT/S IS NOT PARTCIPATING IN LESSONS?

Ans - Participation in class can help a lot in improving a child’s comprehension of the
topics taught in class. When a child particpates in class discussions, his or her
understanding of the topic becomes clear and lucid.

If a child doesn’t participate in the classroom, that can be because of some problem
in comprehension of the topic or some other distraction. We can try to deviate his
mind to the classes.

It is also a possibility that the students who don’t partcipate in the classroom are
introverts, though not necessary always. Therefore,it becomes important to create a
safe classroom where students feel encouraged to take risks. The students can be
enagaged in an activity where there’s teamwork .

A proper rubric should be framed keeping in mind the desired aims and behaviour.

To keep the interest alive, students can also be told to indulge in a subjective type
conversation.

For example: What’s your plan for your birthday?

The intermediate grade students can be told to prepare a gist of their lessons learnt
or paraphrase a poem.

Positive behaviour displayed by the students should be appreciated and encouraged.

To motivate the students further, they can also rewarded. Rewards should be
intresting and engaging for the students.

Apart from rewards, negative reinforcements (along with positive reinforcement) can
also be used to motivate the students to be a an active contributer to the class.

‘Buddy System’ can also be employed to make the inactive students participate in
the class. The buddy of such students can motivate and coax urge them to play an
active role in class discussions.

The student can be told to self-monitor and self-evaluate himself/herself. As the

period or the stipulated time comes to an end, the student can be told to himself for
his participation in classroom activities.
Q2 – A GROUP OF STUDENTS COME LATE TO THE CLASSROOM?

Ans -Punctuality is a virtue and it should be adhered to by one and all(teachers and
students). The late coming to the class should not be taken lightly. Following
measures can be taken to keep a check on the students who are often late to the
classroom.

The class should start with a captivating warmer which should grip attention of every
student. It should make the class interesting by innovative and catchy concepts good
enough to rake the imagination of the students.

If the late comers feel that they are missing out on the content taught in the class ,
then they should be encouraged to reach the class early i.e on time.

The teacher should take the students in confidence and ask them the reason for their
non-punctuality. The teacher should try to be empathetic as he/she comes to know
the reasons given by the students.

If the problem still persists, the teacher can warn the students of the disciplinary
action that can be taken .

Sometimes, healthy competition can also lead to positive results. A puntuality chart

can be kept in the classroom. Students who come to the class on time should be
points and points should be deducted for students late to the class. The student who
enters the class first should be given the duty of keeping a record for the rest of the
students.

The teacher should do tasks of priority at the beginning of the class like attendance,
showing test papers, etc. so that the late comers get motivated to reach the class on
time.

Once in a while , the punctual students should be rewarded. The teacher can keep a
surprise under the desk of the student who always reached the class on/or before
time. It will not only motivate him but also the students who don’t reach the class in
time.
Q-3 ONE STUDENT IS CAUSING DISRUPTION

Ans- Teachers do not have infinite time with their students in a classroom. They need
to be very careful in managing their instructional time. They need to take care of the
obstacles they face and diligently minimize disruptions if any.

In most of the classes ,there is a student who causes disruption in the class. The
teacher should be prepared to take care of any kind of disruption caused by
students. The teacher should quickly handle challenges posed by such kinds of
students while keeping the dignity of the student and decorum of the class intact.
They should strategise well in advance on how to handle such students. Just as one
medicene does not suit everyone, one method might not work with another student.
So the teacher should curate strategies specifically according to the need of the hour
and temperament of the student.

I personally feel I will never shout at a student or use any other words which might
lower his self-esteem. Initially , it might look like it’s the cure for such type of a
situation but not in the long run. Many students do try to test the patience of their
teachers. If the teacher maintains his calm and composure during the initial stage, it
can quickly dissolve the situation but if the teacher also loses his/her cool and gets
combative, it can be detrimental for both the teacher and the student.

As a teacher , I think I should avoid jumping to any conclusions. I should be unbiased

and listen to both sides of a story. I will try to see through what can be the possible
cause of disruption. If need be , I will be an agony aunt for my students.

They say ‘ praise a child in audience but reprimand him in person’. Bearing this in
mind, I will make sure not to embarrass such a student in front of his peers. For a
two way communication, I will talk to the student before or after the class .

‘A little encouragement goes a long way.’ I will give the much needed oppurtunity to
students for self correction. They will be encouraged to establish realistic individual
goals and be given incentives for meeting those goals.

I will keep a follow –up to prevent any future disruptions. If a child improves his/her
behavior , he should be appreciated. He should be motivated to maintain the pace of
his development.
