Field Experience #1

My internship is being completed at Rover Elementary School. Rover is a k-6th grade

school, teaching science, math, and reading curriculum. I am interning in Ms. Turco's 1st-grade

classroom, with 21 students. In total the entire school has 480 students enrolled. At Rover

Elementary their purpose is to “inspire every child and every adult to be excelling learners,

empowered individuals, responsible citizens, and effective contributors every day,”(Rover

Elementary).

The school is under the Tempeunion school district. There are fifteen elementary schools,

five middle schools, one preschool, three specialty schools, and two k-8th grade schools. The

demographics of the Tempe Union District:

The current population of the TempeUnion District is 12,868

Females: 48.5% Males 15.5%

This demographic shows that there are more females compared to males and that the

majority race that attends Tempe Elementary District is white.

The majority at Rover Elementary of the students are either white or Hispanic and there

is a 2% difference between female and male students.

The teachers that are at Rover Elementary are all certified and have three/four years of

experience.

In Ms. Turcos' first-grade classroom has 11 females, and 8 males. The majority race of

the classroom is white, but there are Latinos/Hispanic students in the classroom.

Student and Parent Handbook

● Attendance Policy: After 3 unexcused absences the Teacher will talk to the student and
parent/guardian. If any more than 15 unexcused absences occur and the parent/guardian
has not talked to or read the Principles email, the school will reach out to the district staff.

Shoes must be worn at all times, no hats or jewelry, inappropriate language on clothing,
and gang-related items aren’t allowed to be worn. Hats can be approved along with any
holiday attire.

● Behavior Expectations/Consequences: There are many different approaches to behavior


concerns. Such as dentition, informal talk, parent notification, conferences, short-term
suspicion, explosion, long-term suspension, expulsion, behavior plan, and in-school
suspension. Misconduct form and there is a document attached to the handbook with
different offenses and consequences that go along with it. Zero tolerance bully policy.

● Parent (expectations):

● Health and Safety: Following CDC guidelines for Covid-19. Emergency contact
information is required. Immunizations are needed. Any prescription medications need a
medication form filled out, along with parent/guardian's signature and permission.

After researching and reflecting on the demographics and the classroom environment of

Rover Elementary, it helped me think of the classroom and school environment I would like to

work at. A lot of the rural communities have a family-oriented and welcoming atmosphere. I

want to establish that in my future classroom and it made me realize that a family-supported and

rural environment is important to me as a teacher. The teachers at Rover Elementary specifically

are very well qualified and certified. As a future teacher, I would like to work with colleges that

have the guidance and advice to give me during my first year. This research has given me a lot to

think about and what I personally want while looking into a school to teach.
