INTRODUCTION
Built in 13th century CE under King Narasimhadeva I of the Eastern Ganga Dynasty
The temple was built on the mouth of river Chandrabhaga but later the waterline
receded.
Temple faces the East and the first ray of sunrise strikes the main entrance.
Originally constructed from Khondalite rocks on the shore of river Chandrabhaga.
Also known as Black Pagoda due to its dark colour.
Ancient sailors of Odisha used it as a navigational landmark.
Declared by UNESCO as World Heritage Site in 1984.
