Mental Model

A Mental Model is the perception

or representation that a person
has in his mind of the product he
is interacting with.
Mental Model Example

People in the middle east write

from right to left, whereas people in
the west write from left to right.
Developers need to understand this
in order to build a usable website.
People have these sets of
experiences built up, and they
take those experience into this
new thing that you’re making.
And that’s how they expect it to
work based on their previous
expectations.
For example, in early 2016
Fiat Chrysler automobiles
recall over 1 million vehicles
due to a new shifter design,
called the Rocker Switch
Gearshift.

System Model Vs Interaction Model
•System Model

How something Works

•Interaction Model

How to use something

Good System Model

Bad Interaction Model

Skeuomorphism
Design concept of making items
represented resemble their real-world
counterparts.
If you are creating
something in the unfamiliar,
base it on the familiar.
Mental Models can
evolve over time.
