Calamansi

 The downtrend in calamansi production continued this quarter when

production was recorded at 41.63 thousand mt. It indicated a reduction of
1.79 percent from the 2011 output of 42.38 thousand mt (Table 1).

 The drop in production was attributed to the following:

o Frequent rains and drop in the number of bearing trees experienced in

MIMAROPA;
o Cutting of senile trees in Bicol;
o Smaller fruits harvested in Western Visayas; and
o Effects of typhoon Ofel in Eastern Visayas and those of typhoon Pablo in
Davao Region, Zamboanga Peninsula and Caraga.

 The biggest calamansi producer was MIMAROPA which shared 41.91

TABLES percent in the country’s calamansi production. It posted a total production
of 17.45 thousand mt (Figure 3).

 CALABARZON was the second largest calamansi producer. With 4.61

thousand mt of output, it registered a 2.09 percent drop from the 4.71
thousand mt level in the previous year (Table 4).

 Based on the record of its last five (5) years, the average share of this
quarter in annual calamansi production was 22.11 percent.

level of 105.41 thousand mt (Table 4).

 The drop in production was due to the following:

o Reduction in yield due to frequent rains in MIMAROPA;

o Effect of sudden change in temperature in CALABARZON;
o Harvest of small sizes of fruits in Western Visayas and Central Visayas due
to continuous rains;
o Decrease in bearing trees in Western Visayas;

of 564.16 thousand mt (Table 1).

 The growth in pineapple production was due to the following:

o Expansion of area harvested in Northern Mindanao, SOCCSKSARGEN and

Western Visayas;
o Increase in planting density in Davao Region; and
o New production area in SOCCSKSARGEN.

 Pineapple production in Northern Mindanao was 379.37 thousand mt which

was 18.75 percent higher than the 2011 output of 319.48 thousand mt (Table

 Mango production this 2012 was 767.85 thousand mt, 2.57 percent lower
than the 788.07 thousand mt produced in 2011. Production in Ilocos Region,
the top mango producer was 265.16 thousand mt, lower by 4.16 percent or
11.50 thousand mt from the previous year’s output of 276.66 thousand mt
(Table 5).
 The factors that adversely affected the mango production were the following:
o Less fruits developed due to early rainshowers during the flowering stage
in earlier months of 2012 and the effects of Habagat which occurred in
the second half of the year which affected Ilocos Region;
o Effects of continuous rains in Central Visayas and Central Luzon; and
o Development of young leaves instead of flowers in CALABARZON.
 Despite the reduction in mango production, area planted to mango slightly
expanded by 0.73 percent or 188,432 hectares from the previous year’s level

than the 2.25 million mt harvested in 2011 (Table 1).

 The bountiful harvests in 2012 were attributed to the following:

o Increase in area harvested in Northern Mindanao and Caraga;
o Bigger fruits produced in Ilocos Region, Central Visayas and Davao Region;
o New harvested areas in SOCCSKSARGEN; and
o Minimal incidence of pests and diseases observed in Bicol Region.
 There was production increment although, area planted to pineapple was
